Tire Inflation

A lot has been written lately about the Goodyear G614 tire. Curious as to how everyone that runs the G614 is determining what inflation to run. Without weighing each tire it is pretty much guess work. I run 95 psi which is an overkill according to the goodyear inflation chart, unless one of my tires has 3415 lbs. on it. My total weight is right at 13K which puts right around 10,500 on the axles or around 2625 per tire, which according to the inflation chart requires 65 psi. Not having weighted each tire I am just guessing on inflation, but I doubt that I would ever have a tire with 3400-3750 lbs. on it that would require 95-110 psi. Thinking out loud if this might be some of the cause for the bad tire wear.

Since I have a kitchen slide over one set of tires and two other slides on that side I run my 614's at 105# and have no unusual tire wear. I have had each tire weighed and feel much more comfortable at that pressure.

Inflate to what you feel comfortable, then monitor wear using one of those depth gauges to monitor progress and write down the measurements. While this is extreme, this is the only way to alleviate your concern. I consider myself quite the inflation jockey but I am not this detailed about it.

Of course, I have Marathons, don't travel much any more, and only ensure the tires are properly inflated as much as possible as the trailer sits on the driveway. While the Marathons are rated to carry 3400 lbs each at 80psi, I have between 2400 and 2700 lbs at each wheel. I still use 80 psi and things are okay and don't have any weird wear unlike what other owners have repored but like I mentioned we don't travel as much as we used to (new grandkids, new puppies to train and my 83 year old mom now lives with us).

I'm sure my tires will rot way before they show any signs of improper wear but to reiterate, calculate what you think you need, inflate to what you are comfortable with and for now, your mentality is the important part of your tire wear in that you are thinking about it. Now for the monitoring and you should be fine. This is still no guarantee all will go well. Keep the tools and phone numbers close and the driving safety even closer and we'll wish you very much luck.

About the only thing I'd recommend is you weigh each wheel to know how the load is balanced, not that you can necessarily shift things around. For example, my wheels are all 2600 lbs except for one (where the sofabed is located) is 2400. I don't think this difference is enough of a concern on my rig. Every rig will vary but hopefully all will be under the ratings for the best in safety.

Well, I ran my tires at the 'chart' recommended pressure and had the bad abnormal wear, Lonnie came up to where we were and said it would not hurt a thing to go to the max pressure, because the wear is typical of under-inflation on most tires, but mine were dead on chart pressure. Since I had the inside-outside wear equal on all tires, I just stuck with the max. Even on this new set.
If you do have any abnormal wear and are at and always have been at the max pressure, your adjustment on the tire should sail through the approval process.
I don't think you would be hurt at chart pressure or at max pressure.

We run ours at 110psi.

When we replaced our Marabombs with the G614 the installer was a former truck driver and very knowledgeable about tires. He suggested that we run at 100 psi unless we are fully loaded with water, black, every compartment full. We have the TST tire pressure monitoring system and they are running around 108psi in 67 degree weather. They ride nice, have performed well on full ice, snow, and 65mph winds. We have not had them long enough or put enough miles on them to notice any wear so I can't speak to that.

I agree with the others that you need to run with what you feel comfortable with based on your rig, how much load you are carrying, and the types of conditions you are driving on. So I completely understand if someone disagrees with me.

I run ours at 100 psi. No unusual wear and they have performed great so far.

We filled everything including the pantry and the frig (while we wouldn't travel that way, things do happen). We had one wheel over 3200#. Have since done some things to better balance the load, but run 105# in the tires anyway.

Short trips for us, I have 95psi in ours and expect that our weights are almost identical to yours. Maybe 13,500 with 2500 on the pin. So 11,000/4 is 2750 each on average. I think 95psi give us 3250 per tire which I thought is enough of a safety margin for individual tire load variances. Sounds like 100psi might even be safer. So far so good with the tires.
