I-10 east

Planning our first long trip east from San Jose, Ca. along I-10 through San Antonio, Houston,Galveston, New Orleans and further east. Any good parks near the Houston Space Center. It appears Dickinson, Tx. is the closest place to stay near Galverston. It looks like there is a ferry from Galveston to Port Bolivar Texas. Will it accept RV's and what is cost? Also, New Oreleans, any good parks with shuttle service. So many museums and things to see. What are some of MUST sees. I know I am asking for a lot of info, but I can rely on what I get from the MOC members.
Thanks in advance
Lou & Marilyn Gaudin

I think you should call about that ferry. Yes, no charge, yes, your unit will fit, BUT, they were destroyed by Ike, and I had heard MONTHS till they would be up and running again.

If you check to subscribe, any time someone posts to this thread, as I am now, you will get notified.

New Orleans, years before Katrina, we stayed in the KOA on the western side of town. Have no idea if they are still there. They did have a shuttle to downtown, or you could jump the trolley/bus service. Again, this was before Katrina, so, I would suggest calling any campgrounds in NO.

When we stayed near Houston, again, about 5 years ago, we stayed in a Texas State park WEST of Katy. Name escapes me. The fees were a bit high, as you have to pay a daily fee too, or did then. BUT, WOWIE, what a lovely park, great campsites, deer all over the place. Would go again in a heart beat.

Enjoy your trip.

Lou,

When are you making your trek to our lovely state? We are staying in the Kemah area working hurrican Ike losses. I doubt you will be able to find an RV spot in the Dickinson, Kemah, Galveston area. The best bet would be to try the RV parks in Houston.

Carol is correct that the ferry is not running, nor will it for some time. There isn't anything left of Port Bolivar to see. There is an RV park in Surfside that might have some RV spots, or you might try Oyster Creek. Don't know the phone numbers, but when we passed those parks we did see some vacancy. Not sure if the one in Surfside has sewer or not. They had lots of damage to the Surfside area to the infastructure.

If you are wanting to go to Galveston, Kemah, Johnson Space Center, then a RV park on the Southwest side would be the best. You should include Moody Gardens to your list to see if you are going to Galveston. Just remember this area was hit hard by Ike, so things aren't back to normal yet.

On a good note, we saw diesel for $2.95 in Freeport today with gas at $2.05. Another town you might check RV spots out is Texas City. You could travel on 146 to Galveston and then up to the Space Center. It is a great road that isn't packed like the freeways.

Galveston is about 20 minutes from Texas City and the Space Center is about 30 minutes.

Must sees

San Antonio...Alamo, River Walk, Sea World great shops on the River Walk and restaurants.

Houston has tons of muesums

Clear Lake/Dickinson.....Space Center, Muesums in League City, Kemah Boardwalk once it is open, it is getting there.

Galveston.... Moody Gardens lots of muesums if they are open walking on the beach fishing off the jetties.

Ask any other questions.... you could fit Austin in while you are here ... Muesums Bob Bulluck....that is a wow. LBJ Presidential Library. Barton Springs, Capitol Building.

Hope this helps.

Colleen

When is your trip?
The ferry to Bolivar is closed to the public until further notice. I have been told that Bolivar Peninsular is not longer a peninsular but 3 islands.

Depending on whey your trip is, Galveston shops may be open on the Strand. They are planning on the biker's Lone Star Rally being held around the first of December vice first of November. Galveston was hit pretty heard also, but they are recovering/rebuilding.

There are several campgrounds in and around the Sourthern part of Houston.
Do a Google search on: Texas City Campgrounds, and you will get a listing.
The three major ones that I know are good are: Green Caye, Adventure Out (little close on spacing)and Space Center RV Park.

All are close to Space Center Houston, with Green Caye being the furthest but nicer in spaces. You will really have to call ahead for reservations as these get pretty full with "Winter Texans."

There are several nice campgrounds North of Houston on I-45 and US-59.
Rayford Crossing RV Park and Resort is nice, but pricey.

Park On The Lake is a PA park. The pull throughs are a little tight. Fishing is good as it is on a peninsular with plenty of water access including piers. The premium sites are 44-55 but others are just as nice along the water.

North Shore RV park on Lake Livingston is also very nice.

The North of Houston CG as off the beaten path from I-10.

There are many, many more in the area. Just do a Google search for them.

Louisiana, I would definitely stay at Coushatta Casino Red Shoes RV Park again. (providing link because it is difficult to navigate to.) Hey, you may even get lucky!!!

The KOA in New Orleans is open. We stayed there in May of this year. Easy access, nice level sites. Not in the best part of town, but security was very good and we had no problems. you want the one at: New Orleans West KOA
11129 Jefferson Highway, River Ridge, LA 70123.
DO NO TAKE THE EAST SIDE I-10 INTO OUR OUT OF NEW ORLEANS. It will bounce you around severely. We took it coming out of Florida and into New Orleans, and was it ever a mistake. Try taking the Lake Pontchartrain Causway to I-12E.

Where ever you decide to stop, do a Google search of that area: Example, Google search "hammond, la, campgrounds" without the quotes and you will get a listing. You can do that for each area that you want to stop at to see what they offer in that area for CG's.

If you need a more detailed listing of the CG's around Houston, send me a PM with an email address and I'll see what I can send you.

Good luck.

Hello Lou & Marilyn,

When are you starting east?

We are currently in New Mexico heading to San Jose for Thanksgiving and Christmas, then on to Quartzsite. After that we are planning to head to Texas as well.

Will you still be in San Jose when we get there? We will be staying at the new RV Park on Monterey Road where we stayed last year after we sold the house. I assume that you still keep your Montana at the storage place off Monterey Road.

Are you planning to come to the MOC Rally at Quartzsite?

Grant & Kathy

Thanks to everyone. I forgot about Ike. We will not be leaving until spring, but I see I have lots of homework. Doing the homework makes you want to leave the next day. What a wonderful life RVing is.

We have just completed a I-10 run from Jacksonville, FL to San Antonio, Texas. Around the Houston and Lake Charles areas, the RV parks are full of alot of people working in the area to clean up after the Hurricane. We stayed at the KOA in Lafayette and the Houston East RV park in Baytown. The Houston East got us in but the park is atleast 95% full. I recommend calling ahead like we did. There are still alot of buildings in the Houston area with blue tarps over large parts of the roof. I would imagine that alot of work will be done to get things back into shape. If you are interested, check out our trip on our Good Sam website at http://goodsamclub.mytripjournal.com/millingtontravel
