Installing aftermarket brake controller

We have a 2008 3500 GMC with the integrated brake controller. We have not had any luck with this, we have had it to dealership on 2 different occasions for failure. Now for a 3rd time we have the "Service Trailer Brake System" notice again on DIC. We are going to install the P3 brake controller. Has anyone else done this? If so could you please tell us how you did it. We have watched several videos and read several tech reports from e-trailer on this, but would like someone else to also give advise from their personal experience. Thanks in Advance.

I have not installed one since 2005, when I bought our first truck with an integrated controller. I did install at least two (not the brand you specified) on previous trucks, and while too many years ago to remember specifics, I do remember that the instructions were pretty simple, and I had no problems installing. Reaching back 8 years, believe there was a positive to the fuse box, a negative to ground, and a third line to the switch at the brake pedal.

I can't say definitively about trucks with the integrated brake controller, but prior to that you can buy a color coded pigtail compatible with the factory plug under the dash on your truck. You just spice it into the back of your aftermarket controller and plug it in to the under dash connection. They are all basically the same as far as wiring. Power, Ground, Feed wire to trailer (blue), and command wire from output side of under dash brake switch. The cheaper brake controllers are a delay type controller and the more expensive like Prodigy are a reactive controller which are way better. Ayways ... perhaps you can just unplug the integrated controller and plug one of the aftermarket pigtails right into it hooked to whatever brand you go with. I'd say just call one of the controller manufacturers, ask for tech support, and pose the question.

Excellent advice
I have the P3 and installed it myself when I bought my current truck (see signature). The truck didn't come with an integrated controller. The connection and installation was easy as I bought the connector that plugged right in to the electrical panel under the dash near the brake pedal. The instructions were easy to follow.
The P3 has been a great controller with zero problems in over 4 years of service.
