Thumbs down Class A license need

Is everyone finding they need a non commercial driving license to tow a Montana. My F350 dully and Montana have a gross limit of 30,000 pounds. Does everyone upgrade their license?

Read your state's laws carefully. Unless you're towing commercially, in most states you won't need anything special. There are a few that want you to have at least an endorsement of some kind. Most don't.

In Texas they have what is called a Non-CDL drivers license. A Non-CDL class B and a Non-CDL class A. The differences are what you are towing and the weight of the combination.

My GVWR combination is 27,400 and the trailer is over 10,000lbs so I need a class A. I have a Texas Non-CDL class A.

In Texas a class C is only good for 26,000lbs.

Do your own research based on your home state. If you are legal in your home state you are good in the US.

In California any trailer or 5th wheel that has a GVWR of 15,000 lbs or more requires a commercial or non-commercial class A license.

In British Columbia we require an endorsement on our drivers license or a Class A if the trailer weighs more than 10K. To get the endorsement a driver must do a written test plus a drivers test.

In Saskatchewan, we require an endorsement "G" on our drivers license if the trailer weighs more than 10,000 lbs and is not for commercial use. To get the endorsement a driver must do a written and a drivers test.

Hi

I hold Commercial classes A ever sense they were required.

I haven’t ever checked about needing one however a few years back the state of Florida started requiring the commercial drivers to register their medical every 2 years. I register as a class A driver that didn’t require a medical and haven’t heard anything more.

Didn't realize Saskatchewan had the same requirements as British Columbia. I'm sure there are a lot of drivers in both provinces don't have the endorsement as would be the same case in the states that require it.

Appears my regular license will get me through for where I want to go. Great info with the Federal guidelines.

This is quoted from the SGI (Saskatchewan Government Insurance) website:
Heavy trailer - exceeding 4,600 kg

You may need a Heavy Trailer G Endorsement added to your drivers licence to pull a heavy trailer. If the combined weight of the trailer and its contents exceed 4,600 kg (10,000 lbs), it qualifies as a Class 1 unit.
You can obtain the G Endorsement on your Class 2, 3, 4, or 5 licence, which allows you to drive 2-axle trucks (excluding power units) towing trailers more than 4,600 kg. Drivers must be 18 and not be a Novice driver.
To obtain the G Endorsement on your driver's licence, you must meet the approved medical and vision standards, and pass the written and road test.

Also:

If the combined weight of your truck, trailers and load is greater than 5,000 kg, it must be indicated on the registration of the towing unit. Remember to include the weight of towing vehicle, trailers you are pulling and the contents when calculating this.

Ahhhhh Kalifornia, wait there's more.....

RECREATIONAL TRAILER ENDORSEMENT
A driver must have a fth-wheel recreational trailer endorsement added to his/her Class C driver license to pull a fth-wheel recreational trailer over 10,000 lbs., but not over 15,000 lbs. GVWR, which is not used for hire. This endorsement is not required if the driver has a commercial or noncommercial Class A driver license.

Something to consider. If you are required to have a commercial license go ahead and get one. If it is not required you may not want to get one. If you have a CDL and you have an alcoholic beverage with a meal your percentage for legal limit is 0.04% and non CDL is 0.08%. I almost never drink alcohol but will occasionally have a glass of wine with a meal. If I did get pulled over for some reason I didn't want to be over the limit.

I too in B.C.,needed an endorsement when I got my rig, 2007. Did not need 'A' class.
Mine is suitable for our trailers w/o airbrakes.

Entailed a written exam and a driving test. Not hard.

I had it explained to me this way. Police will not likely check you for the proper endorsement. Too much to do. UNLESS you do something stupid or somehow you are brought to their attention such as a collision or speeding.

Find out what your jurisdiction requires or you could get a nasty surprise especially if the problem occurs in some other jurisdiction.
