Onan 5500

What is the easiest way to lift an Onan 5500 generator (280 lbs) into the front compartment of the Montana besides getting a friend to help lift it? Has anyone used a transmission jack to lift it to the right height and then just kind of slide it in? Any ideas will be appreciated to make it easier.

Get someone else to do it!

The transmission jack sounds like a good idea; perhaps sitting on a piece of plywood to "ramp" it into the compartment.

If you need any photos of how the factory does it, let me know.

Yes that will work. I used and adjustable height work table.

I used the front loader on my tractor. If you have cribbing material you could build it up to where you can slide it in. be careful not to bend the door lip. I used 1x2 over the opening 2x4 where difficult to remove after sliding it into the compartment.

You could also check your local rental store and see if they have a Genie Lift or something similar. We use these to position 800lb batteries.

I just took the one out of my MH. If you don't have access to a fork lift of some kind I would build a table braced well, that was the height of my bay the raise the front of the camper an inch or so to make getting it out easier.
What is wrong with the generator you need to get it out. How many hours are on it.

There is nothing wrong with the generator, I took it out of a previous trailer we owned and it has been sitting in the garage for two years. I thought that I should install it in the Montana instead of having it sit there.
