Stopping awning sun-rot

On my last trailer the awning sun-rotted on the part that is always exposed to the sun near where it attaches to the trailer. Pretty common I imagine. On my new 3400rl, I don't have the covers for the awning I have seen, but I'm still determined to hold that damage at bay for as long as I can. I am currently applying 303 protectant about every 5-6 weeks to the exposed top. Is there anything else I can/should be doing to keep it from deteriorating?

On another forum someone said to cut 2" out of thin 4" pvc pipe. Use this to cover the awning while in storage. Might work.
