we got a care package with our monty. new water hose,regulator,etc... we got a 6 globe light set around $100.00 value, i put them up this weekend on our shake down trip and turned them on and went inside, later came out and had a zillion little bugs on the lites and monty, question is: ( they are 60watt regular bulbs)
IS there a lite in that size that doesnt attrack bugs, i was told LED'S dont attract bugs, other option is a bug zapper dont really want that any help would be great

I was pretty sure the yellow bulbs were the ones to use that didn't attract bugs. I guess they are still available, assuming BIG BROTHER hasn't outlawed them too.

I would think it's the color not the type of bulbs that attract bugs. Like Rohrmann hints, it's been documented a few places that you want yellow because most insects can't see that color, go figure, which is why many rigs (like my Monty) have an amber light as the "porchlight". You are right to not seek a bug zapper, because they actually attract bugs prior to getting zapped. Some people don't mind these because it then attracts the bugs from where you are and into this bug zapper that you would activate away from where you are.

Maybe you can find some Yellow or amber emitting LEDs. Send a PM to "Someone&Kat" (I forget the member name, maybe it's Michael & Kat) who have been known to supply LEDs to many members. Ozz sells lots of RV supplies and maybe he can find something for you as well. Hope someone else can provide a source.

Consider this, too. I've heard that bugs are also attracted to the CO2 that we exhale and I don't know how to stop this aside from suffocating your self.

I would think that 6 60w bulbs would light up half the campground and blind your neighbors.

I recommend getting 25w bulbs instead and they should not draw as many bugs.

Our LED porch light and our LED scare lights don't attract near as many bugs as the old bulbs did.

We just string our lights away from the camper enough to eliminate having to fight your way thru the bugs to get in and out. There's always a couple of trees or old kerosene lantern posts at most of the places we stay at. LED's lessen the issue, but not entirely. Granted they look nice hanging off the awning, but at what price? With 60 watters ... you surely were a beacon of the campground

On edit ... occasionally we do set out a bug zapper 30' or so from the camper ... we hang it on a shepherds hook we carry with us. It does cut down on the issue as well as provide entertainment to listen to the big ones meet their demise.

Bug Lights is the answer, there Yellow in color. I also use a dimmer controller I bought at Ikea for 6 or 7 dollars works great called " DIMMA " will work safely for 300 watts so 40 watt lights might be better

We sometimes use the zapper at the home base, but it involves too much for us to take it with us most of the time.

We've used LEDs in our porch light and even changed the cover to clear and have enjoyed minimal bugs.

We use the multi-color globes that have the low watt Christmas (tiny) bulbs in them. So far they don't seem to attract bugs, but gives enough glow to see around the camp site. JT

I set out a bright light, a glass of Jack Daniels and a handful of sand. The bugs fly in, drink the Jack Daniels, get drunk and stone each other to death with the sand. It's fun to watch.
