How high is it up there?

Does anyone know how high it is to the top of front A/C on a 2010 3400RL? I'm trying to save myself a trip up the ladder to the roof.

About?

You don't need to know "about."

Sorry, but you need to measure while it is hooked up to the tow vehicle. 1 inch can make a "crunch" of difference. The easiest way is to have someone else do it, like I did. I used a laser level. leveled it at the highest point and let it hit the tape measure that someone is holding on the ground and the person on the roof has the large number end.

But, I guess you could always say that the approaching bridge is "about" 13' 5"

I'm 13'3" sitting level on the landing gear with the regular AC unit and the trailer runs level on the truck. I haven't measured it while on the truck. If I came to a bridge marked 13'5", I wouldn't trust it to be right.

My 3400 is a 2009, but I measured it at 13'2" - that was using a level while on jacks. I have the regular profile A/C. I just got new tires that are slightly bigger and should add .5 to 1" max. I am going to remeasure hooked up next week, just to know for sure.

How many times have they added paving under the bridge since the measurement was posted.

OK ... what's that all about? What do you mean that you'll set the GPS at 13' 9"? I've never seen that type of thing mentioned before. Is that in a built-in GPS or a one of those that stick on the windshield?

Oh, and apart from the laser method, are there any other simple methods to measure the exact height?

Just curious, I measured my `09 3400 hitched up on level ground and got 12`4" on the back a/c and 12` 5" at the highest point in front top of shower dome (no front a/c). 5er is level when hitched up and I am running G-614`s.

I went up on the roof with a 1X2 stick and a level. I held it out and DW measured the height with a measuring stick.

In July ran our 2010 3400 with standard profile a/c under a bridge in Boston labeled 13' 6" and left nothing behind. So, I guess you can say that the 3400 is less than 13' 6" tall at it's highest point. Now I also guess you could argue that since I did not get out to take an accurate measure of the bridge height, my observation is flawed. Personally, I believe our 3400 is 13' 3" tall.

You are one brave soul. I get nervous going under anything not labeled at least 14'. I think you were a bounce away from getting a new air conditioner if you have one on the front. Measured mine with a laser and got 13' 4" on the truck.

Actually, I tried to detour around the bridge numerous times, but kept getting directed (by sign and navigation system)right back to my original course!

Jim & Vickie gave you the most common way without a laser. A flat straight edge (board) across the top of the AC, or highest point. Put a level on the board and keep it level. Holding a board extended out past the side of the coach can sometimes be challenging to hold it level. Once it is on the AC, let it rest and walk towards the edge with the level. Pick up the board and level it. I would use a ladder on the side of the RV and have the measuring person climb the ladder and then extend the tape measure to the ground until it touches. Then, read the lower edge of the board. Use the edge of the board and not the "finished" side. The edge will be straighter.

Now, if you are in the mood for thrilling adventures, find an underpass that is "about" what you think your height is. Pull under. If it does not scrape you are just about under that height. Stop in the middle of the underpass. Climb up on the roof and measure the distance from the roof of the overpass to the highest point on the trailer. Use an accurate calculator and subtract the difference from the height of the overpass. This should give you a more accurate, about, height.

Now, before going on a trip, call all the states department of transportation that you will be passing through that have overpasses of any kind. Ask them if any roads have been resurfaced lately. Also ask if the overpass height has been adjusted for the resurfacing. Most likely they have not because they typically do not resurface under the overpass in most areas. Now you need to watch for that 2 up to 2 inch rise in the surface at the entrance and exit of the overpass

I'm sorry, I just couldn't resist.

A little more serious side. I am always so happy to see an 18 wheeler with a box coming in my direction. I just hope that he traveled the entire highway. The standard height of an 18 wheeler box is 13' 6". How do I know. I asked several and have always gotten the same answer.

...and don't forget that the height of your tv's bed can make an inch or two difference. Seems that the answer keeps coming back to 13' 3" to 13' 4," with a forward a/c installed.

An easy way to measure is to find something like a roof or bar on a flat piece of ground under which you can park the rig. Measure the difference in height between the top of the aircon and the roof/bar and then remove the rig and measure the height to the roof/bar. Subtract the first measurement and you have your rig height.

Now I just have to find such a place!!

Cheers
Craig
