Goodyear G614's MUST SEE!

Well, It finally happen. I've never had any tire problems until now and I consider ourselfs very lucky this time.
We lost one of our dogs last week and had to cancel our trip to Yellowstone which probably would have put 1500 to 2000 miles on the trailer. To take our minds off the dog situation we decided to take a short 200 mile round trip to the beach. When we arrived back home,I got on my knee's to lay out the planks I usually back up on and discovered the tire damage. Now remind you, before we left I went under and checked the suspension and tork the U bolts,at that time I didn't see any problems.
I still love these Goodyears,I'm sure all brands of tires once in a while have problems. I believe if I would have been running Chinese tires, that tire would have blown. The tire didn't lose one pound of air through the whole trip.
I run air pressure at 105 pounds and all tires are balanced and we run fairly light since we are mainly part timers.
We been running these tires for two and a half years and have around 10 to 12 thousand miles on them. America's Tires measured the tread depth and charged me 73.00 for a replacement. All in all we we're very lucky.
By the way,we usually cruise around 60 to 62 miles per hour.
Jack

Wow. I'm picking up our first set of G614's tomorrow morning and taking off the Marathons that came on our new Montana. I assume your other three tires look fine and the axle allignment is good?

What is the psi rating on the tires? I wasn’t aware that they would be rated for that pressure.

Glad you found it when you did and it didn’t cause a problem on the road.

Is there a reason you are running 105 psi? The reason I ask is that according to the load inflation tables, that provides for 14,700 pounds of load. I believe your rig max weight rating is 15,500 pounds with about 2,045 at the pin. I was planning on running our 614's at 95 psi which appears to be sufficient for your rig as well. I am not questioning the wisdom of running at that pressure, just wondering if there was something that I have not accounted for that you thought about??

Jack,

Just out of curiosity, what is the date code of that bad tire? I heard that some of the earlier ones dated 06, had some problems??

I might be all wet on this... Thanks in advance!

Gee, Jack, I wouldn't run my tires so close to the max pressure if I didn't have to. No guarantee that that caused your problem, but I sure like to have some headroom, if possible. That doesn't mean I'm not running my E rated tires at 80 psi, but I'm not happy about it.

Wow, Jack, I'm glad you caught this before it caused serious problems. As you said, any brand will have some percentage of failures. Any brand. But, like you, I'm feeling a lot better with the G614's, especially after the expensive blowout damage we had back in April.

When I used the Goodyear inflation chart based on the weight on each wheel, it showed the heaviest wheel requires 105 psi on those tires. So I figured 105 psi in all five of them. After thinking about it I went ahead and inflated all five to 110 psi. That allows the tire to lose up to 5 pounds and not be underinflated for the weight. Given we sometimes go from desert to mountains to desert, that much pressure change is probably within reason. I still check them, though.

You're thinking like me Steve, their are times we'll run a little heavier than others. I figure I'll run 105,and I know others that do the same,I can't be weighing the trailer everytime I move it.
The stamp on the tires when I purchased them showed they we're manufactured about 6 months before. Like I said, even though their great tires,I'm sure once in a while you'll get a bad one,and I got it.

Jack,
Thanks for sharing your problem. It may help some of us with tire choice. Even though you had a problem with the one tire does not mean the others are also bad. Here's hoping and it is most likely that you just got a bad tire. It's going to happen to the best of them!

Sure glad you discovered it at home and not somewhere out on the road. That could have been far worse.

This is perhaps one of the few things that even the best tire pressure monitoring systems would not have helped you with. I have decided to go with the Pressure Pro system. I will certainly mention you to them when I order them. Thank you for all the first hand info.

OK. Time to get that rig set up for Q. We've only got a few months to get ready. I'll get the steaks from Harris Ranch you bring the BBQ!

Later,
Dennis

Boy, it's great that that thing didn't come all apart on the highway and wreck all the fender wells; you caught it in time!!
I will say that that is very unlikely to happen to a LT tire as the standards are higher and the tire has superior molding qualities of cords to rubber sidewall and tread. Very typical of any ST tire; we have seen this over and over again on the STs with face separation; some in the early stages yet some will last longer. I will stay with LTs on my Monty.

Sorry to hear about the tire problem Jack. Never had any luck with the China tires on Monty. On my wat East this year for the virginia rally had another one seperate, now that is 4 years in a row I've had tire problems. So I replaced all with G614's and new rims rated for 110 psi. Like Phil I run mine at 95 psi, also have the TST monitor for pressure and find the pressure builds to about 105-108 during a trip.

I just emailed Jennifer at Tredid to confirm my 2009 Montana wheels
are good for the pressure of the G614's. She is sending me a letter
and stickers to put on the wheels stating they are rated for the higher load. In one year I replaced all 4 Marathons.
