Richmond Hill (Savannah), GA

We just returned from a wonderful weekend at Fort McAllister State Park in Richmond Hill, GA. This is only about 15 miles from Savannah. When we pulled into the campground the first units we saw were two Montanas. Two of the three campground hosts!! We met them during the weekend and shared information about this forum and our up coming Rally.

The campsites are in a heavily wooded area of tall trees with hanging spanish moss. Very picturesque. 30amp electric, and water hook-up. Many sites are large pull throughs. Each site had a picnic table and fire ring. If you had a small chain saw you were allowed to cut and burn any dead wood laying on the ground in the area (wood was plentiful) and there was also wood available for purchase at the hosts sites. Dump station is on the way out as you are leaving and convenient. There were bath houses with showers and laundry facilities. They were clean and acceptable, but not fancy! There is a large modern pier for fishing and a dock if you bring your boat. A boat launching ramp is also available as are rental kayaks and canoes. We found other campers very friendly as were the camp host couples.

Spent Saturday morning touring the fort which is an earth fortification from the Civil Wat and wonderfully maintained. There is a small charge for the museum and fort which is one of GA State historic sites. A brochure provides information for a self guided tour and is very informative and interesting. The trails and tour brochure are easy to follow.

Saturday afternoon we drove into Savannah and took one of the trolley tours of the historical area. Savannah is a beautiful city with wonderful architecture, lots of iron work, and intriguing history. It has been the site of several movies including "Forrest Gump" and "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" (which is based on a true story). The city market area and waterfront were our favorite areas.

Fort McAllister is a great campground if you enjoy nature. Savannah has a great deal to explore. This is an area we will definitely return to when we have more time for exploring!
