I'm planning our route out for the trip to SD. We want to go through Wyoming and then head north to the Black Hills area before going on to Sioux Falls. What is a good route????

Where are you heading in Wyo? The only road you do not want to take is route 14A from Cody Wyo. to route 90.
There is a hill known locally as O MY GOD HILL and it is a good one.

Sue, we didn't approach the Black Hills from that direction. We came down from I-90. But, if I were planning your route I'd take one of the US highways, maybe US 25 from just north of Cheyenne. Or US 385 from around Sidney, NE. But, then, we like seeing what there is to see along US highways anyhow.

What dates? In early Aug..the Stugis Motorcycle gettogether is on. The area is just LOADED with bikes and the area camping sites are hard to come by.
Just a heads-up.

Hi Sue..... We just came from Cody yesterday on Hwy 14 across the Bighorn Mountains and it was awesome. Note that I said 14 not 14a. We are now in Sheridan and will be going through the Black Hills today.

Bill, we are not leaving here until Aug. 15 so we will miss the Sturgis thing. We knew about it but thanks for mentioning it.
Helen, Steve, thanks for the suggestions.
Happy trails...................

A couple of years ago we came east out of Yellowstone NP (stayed at West Yellowstone ID), stopped at Cody for the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, then spent the night at this deluxe site at the KOA at Buffalo WY. It was a NICE change of pace - our own private hot tub.

Sue,
When I made the trip I took Interstate 25 from Cheyenne, WY north to the junction with US 18/20 at Orin, then east to Lusk, north on US 18/85 about 50 miles to US 18 east into Edgemont SD, Hot Springs, and a short distance to State Hwy. 79 and north into Rapid City.
