Tow Command Ford Problem

I've developed or just noticed an annoying problem with our 06 F350 when in the Tow/Haul mode. When coasting to a stop - right at around 15 mph - I get this spastic slam like I hit a curb or something and I hear an electric motor noise on the firewall like you do with antilock brakes. It did it a couple of times with the Montana and made me shutter. Today I was towing a small utility trailer and it did it again. The utility trailer has no brakes, so I've ruled out a problem with the brake controller -

Any similar experiences out there before I take this in to Ford for an endless encounter because it will run fine for them?

It's your transmission down shifting. The noise you hear outside is more likely the aux cooler cooling the transmission. What happens is the fan speed will increase noticeably to help get air to the transmission cooler during these downshifts.

You may be hearing the whinning noise from the tranny because the torque convertor is locked up.

I guess a better description of the motor noise would be an electric pump - like the water pump in the Montana only faster rpm (lasts about a second) - and it is a HARD coffee spillin jerk and then it lets go instantly.

Perhaps it is dropping into first gear at that speed - but it acts more like a downshift if I was in low range.

I have noticed that the vacuum pump for the truck makes that sound, maybe that's it. You notice that sound also, when the truck is first keyed on at start up, is that the sound you Hear?

Hey Ozz,
It might be - I'll have to listen to the start up noise more carefully.

Brad, ours does the same thing and hubby says it happens when it is in tow/haul mode when the transmission shifts down, like Broome101 says. When coming to a stop he sometimes takes it out of tow/haul. And the noise is most likely the cooling fan.

I also have the 06 PSD. In tow haul I do not have this problem. Nice clean smooth downshift. In fact, when coasting, if I tap the brake pedal, it causes the transmission to downshift to the next lower gear. No noise or bumping whatsoever. If I were you, I would head for the dealership... Tim

Brad, on the earlier models with the TorqShift there was a TSB for a hard downshift to (either 1st or 2nd, can't remember). I had that on my 2003. They reprogrammed and never had the problem again. I assumed the newer ones don't do that. My 2005 is smooth as butter, shifting both up and down.

See another Montana or Mountaineer on the road? Flash lights twice, it might be one of us!

We had a recall notice on our 2005. We took it in and had it re-calibrated (is that the word?) It purrs like a kitten now when shifting down.

Well thanks ALL for the feedback! It's encouraging to know that I'm not just going crazy - and now I'm sure its the downshift into first. The first time I thought I had a short in the Montana brakes and locked em up.

I'll take it in the Dealer - due for oil anyway. Once it's fixed I won't be afraid to drive it with my false teeth in again

Steve - is TSB a Safety Technical Bulletin? Just thought I would talk to the Dealer about it.

Yes, go see your dealer. My 06 PSD has never done anything like that. I'd want the repair on record, incase anything went wrong in the future.

Get it to a Ford dealer..soon. I have an 05 F350 as does my daughter and her husband, I have had the turbo replaced and my daughter had their transmission replaced, all under warranty fortunately (turbo $1,000.00) Ford was very good about it, wouldn't let me take it from the shop, gave me a loaner and had overnight delivery on the parts, 1.5 days and I was back in my truck.

Here's a good web site to read up on the TSB's on the Ford truck.
http://dan.prxy.org/Truck/F-350_main...SBs_FRAME.html
I have a 06 F-250 6.0 PSD had to get to truck reprogramed as stated in the TSB's and a new Turbo due to bearing failure. Runs better now then first new.
Good luck,
Kim

Kim, thanks for the TSB link. Called Ford dealer this morning and the tech says it sounds like a software problem. Taking it in Monday to be remedied. Leaving for Goshen Tuesday or Wednesday.

Well - first response back from Ford is "normal". I told them no way - the jolt is so intense with the Montana on the back it will knock a coffee cup out of it's holder. They are going to play with it some more.
