gourds

Picked up a few gourds in fl.this year and was wondering if anybody is working with these.Didn't even know about gourds till I saw them at a roadside stand and asked some questions.They make great birdhouses and other things.

I have 3 laundry basket FULL of dried gourds I was planning to paint, but just haven't gotten around to it, LOL. Some people paint them, some carve them, some cut them up and glue parts back together to make sculptures from them, and some make bowls, dippers, or bird houses from them. Have fun with yours. I buy them by the bushel(sp) basket from the Mennenites in Northwest Oklahoma. They make GREAT bird houses. The trick is to paint them before drilling the hole for the birds to crawl in or the peg they land on. The paint makes the gourd a little bit stronger. If you see my monty there are sure to be a couple of bright yellow bird gourd houses near by.
