AC Problem

I've a Duo Therm (Domestic) 15k btu model 59516. Just turned it on for the first time this year and it starts to cycle up for a minute of so then blows the 20amp breaker of the 20/30 pair supporting the AC. Any ideas why this might be happening?

Never mind - found Dianan Colin's thread on this and it turns out to be the fan. http://www.montanaowners.com/forums/...ad.php?t=15227
After reading this post I opened the shroud and found the fan frozen. If I'm very lucky I'll be able to free it up.

My 15k BTU AC blows the breaker if it shuts off then I turn it back on within a few minutes of it turning off. My AC usually turns off when I change the speed of the cieling fan. If it comes back on in less than a couple of minutes the fuse gets blown. I think it has something to do with the compressor having to have time to "chill out". Other than that I have no idea. All I can do is gather information on what makes it blow the breaker and try to change the way I do things to prevent this. Try running the fan on "on" instead of auto and see if it helps. Good luck

Tim,
You are correct about the cycle time, however, the thermostat (If it's a newer electronic model) should have a built in time delay to counter this.
A solid state adjustable time delay=(Delay on make) Johnstone Supply ICM Controls, 3 minutes fixed, #B11-832, $9.21 is available, simple hook up, just 'break' the red, or voltage wire in the thermostat circuit, one wire in, one out of the 2"x2" delay module. I carry 5 or 6 and install them on units I service.
Tim, I am puzzled about the change in fan speed, causing problems, sounds like there is a conflict in voltage-amperage draw there. I would take the fan power over on it's breaker, and move it to another breaker, or give it it's own, to see if that solves the problem.
I think 315RLS stated he had a fan motor hang up.

Ozz,

That is a good idea. I know that the fan is not on the same breaker as the AC because when the AC trips, the fan still works. Maybe the fan is on a circuit that is loaded with other light fixtures. I bet putting it on its own circuit would solve it all, but I'm a civil engineer not an electrician.

This forum is great! I wouldn't have known where to start to find/fix this problem if not here. I spent two hours taking everything apart, fixing the fan and putting it back together again. Less than the travel time to and from the dealer and a lot less expensive too...

If I could just find the short in my brake wiring that is giving me the SH and overload indicators from my prodigy brake controller I'd be in business.
