Taos, New Mexico

Planing on dropping the son off in Lubbock for school and than heading to Taos for a few days of cooler weather. Map Quest wants to take you from Santa Rosa to Las Vegas New Mexico on up to Taos is anyone familar with this route we will be pulling a 3670RL with a Chevy 3500DRW Duramax. Just would like any information about road type 2-4 lane? Mountain passes? From the looks of the map there is a few places that look like switch backs? Is there a better route without adding a lot of time?
Thanks
Mike

I would go I40 West to US 285, North to Santa Fe, US84 North to Espanola and then NM68 to Taos.

The route mapquest detailed does not consider pulling a trailer.

I would take 84 West from Lubbock, Tx to Clovis, NM then on to Ft. Sumner, NM where it turns north and goes to Santa Rosa, NM. Go west on I-40 from Santa Rosa to Clines Corners and follow the route ARJ suggested. 84 is 4 lane from Lubbock to a few miles west of Clovis. After that it is a very wide 2 lane to Ft. Sumner. From Ft. Sumner to Santa Rosa is 2 lane and not as wide but was in good shape the last time I went that way, about 2 years ago. I-40 is.......well, I-40. 285 North is a 2 lane that is good for the most part, a little bumpy in a few places, but overall not bad. I would suggest taking the by-pass at Santa Fe as 285/84 goes right through town and the streets are narrow with lots of traffic. It's do-able but makes me pretty nervous. Once you leave Santa Fe, the roads are good and you should have no problem.
