Pittsburgh to Las Vegas
We are heading west next week. The GPS as well as MSN maps chart the trip 70W through Denver. We are thinking a better route would be 70 to 40 to Flagstaff and then to Vegas, avoiding the mountains in Colorado. Any thoughts?

You may want to check the altitude of Flagstaff, about 7,000 ft. For what it's worth...

We have pulled our Monty over Flagstaff many times its a piece of cake, How ever when you get to Kingman AZ you may want to go the route to Bullhead city in that direction. Your GPS should show you the way.. We have never pulled over Hover Dam because of having to stop and having it gone through. Good luck and have a safe trip which ever way you decide to go.

The route through Bullhead City is a couple of 12 mile long 9 percent grades with a stop sign at the bottom, we did it and I don't recommend it to anyone if it can be avoided, go over Hoover Dam. This year we are going through Denver on I 70. We go west every year at some point, nice sights.

We pulled our 3400 over Hoover and the guy just looked inside without opening any slides, piece of cake.....Hoover is truly amazing!!!!!!! I could see if someone was carrying certain objects they might not want to give it a try, kind of like going into Canada.....

While it's true I-40 at Flagstaff is over 7000 ft, it's a lot easier route than I-70. However, I-70 is MUCH prettier (IMO). Maybe go west using I-40, then I-15/I-70 on the way home and experience both routes.

Good route Art, see all the good stuff. Be sure and stop at the Grand Canyon while on the I-40 leg.

We have returned from our trip - 3 wonderful weeks and 1 wonderful new son-in-law! The wedding in Caesar's Palace's Venus Gardens was beautiful and the Oasis RV Resort certainly exceeded our expectations. We went west via I70 through Denver. What a truly breathtaking state! Majestic snow-capped mountains and deep river canyons. Coming home, we traveled on I40, through Flagstaff. We were stopped by Homeland Security before Hoover Dam, but they finished their inspection before I could grab a soda from the refrigerator, so that's really a non-issue! The weather was HOT! So we just spent lots of time in the pool. I can see the need for an additional air conditioner in the southwest that we really don't need in western PA! Thanks again for all your help. This is one big, beautiful USA!
