I95 From Maine thru to NC

Gosh, I hate to ask this because I did a while ago ask for very similar directions. I can't seem to navigate the search function all that well and I lost what was a very good set of directions from one or more of the members. Here is my question, I'm coming down I95 from Maine to the Great Smokys and I would like to avoid NYC and Philly. I know to take 495 around Boston. I do want to go to Oxford, MD on my way down and I suppose proceed from there to Virginia Beach. Then from there to Skyline Drive. I can figure that stuff out but how about the NYC and Philly detour? Thanks in advance.

Take I-495 South to I-290 West to I-90 West (Mass Pike), then take I-84 West accross CT to Newburgh, NY to I-87 South to I-287 West to I-78 West.

You then have 2 choices -- stay I-78 West to I-81 South or when you get to Allentown, PA take I-476 to I-495, then hook-up with I-95 South in Delaware / Maryland

If you come to MD Delaware line, I recommend 301 south to Oxford, MD. Then across the Chesapeake Bay (no tole going west) to Annapolis. I do not think Propane is allowed on route 13 in the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel near Norfolk. Then you need to look at either Virginia Beach or Sky Line Drive. Watch out for low bridges on Sky Line Drive and Tunnels near Norfolk (some have Propane restriction) getting into Virginia Beach. If VA Beach then take 301 south and cross the Potomac river way south of the DC Beltway.
I used the Hampton Bridge/Tunnel (I-64). All I had to do was stop, turn off propane (some times it is verified) and drive the tunnel. There is an inspection point to do this going each way.
Hope this helps.

If you plan on doing day excursions on Skyline Drive, stay in Front Royal at North Fork Resort. We enjoyed that place in July last year. If you are a Passport America member it is only $20 a night. If you are not a member and decide to become one, let me know and I'll give you my number as a references and a credit to me.

Thank you Ray. I will take a look at that and I will also visit your journal. Thanks again.

Thanks John. I wonder if I should avoid Skyline drive re: low bridges? Or is it a matter of staying in the centre? I will map out your suggestions, thank you for them.

Thanks Wayne. I do not belong but I will do as you suggest if we decide to sign up. Thanks for the tip on where to stay. I will look that up.

When we travel on non-interstate roads, we check the Low Clearance Guide from America's Independent Truckers' Association, Inc. at http://www.aitaonline.com/Info/Road/...learances.html. It covers low clearances, bridge heights and below normal bridge clearances. It has saved us a couple of times when planning routes. Hope this helps your planning. Good luck!
