What is the secret to keep fenders tight?

On our first outing yesterday many of the screws that hold the plastic fenders on the Monty loosened up and some fell out. They are just basic sheet metal screws. What have folks done to stop this annoying problem?

Thanks!

Got to Lowes and in the specialty hardware drawers in the hardware aisle they have speed nuts or slip nuts in packages. Put these on the back of the screws inside of the fenders and your problems are solved!

Here is what they look like:

Yep we have used the same as Bingo. Spring nuts or speed nuts they call them and they are the solution.

I know I'm in the minority but have never had a problem with ours in almost 5 years full timing.

Depends on who was operating the screwdriver when the fenders were installed. Over-tighten any at all and it strips the area where the fender attaches and there is nothing that can be done other than try to fasten them another way. Been there, done that and finally reached a resolution that is maintenance free.

Seen more than a few laying on the side of the road, after loosing one on a Crossroads fiver I started using silicone on the backside of the screws. works perfect, did it to the new Montana after getting home from dealer after pickup to find 3 screws gone and the rest lo0se. Tightening or not tightening won't change the fact they will vibrate lose so the silicone fixes all that and it remains flexible and won't dent the light aluminum skirting etc... good luck

I agree with Bingo on the speed nuts. Also I had the trailer tires balanced. I have lost one since then, (about 8,000 miles) Bill

Got the same tip from Bingo several years ago about this fix and it works great! Have shared it with many other campers since then. Just another example of the great tips and ideas we can find here!!

We benefited from Bingo's solution as well. No more loose/missing fender screws!

Besides the speed nuts, some have used pop rivets to secure fenders. I also saw where some have put machine screws with locknuts on them.

Machine nut and bolt with a lock washer. Have not had to do anything since.

Be advised - On my Mountaineer I tried a machine bolt and a washer. But apparently there is a gap between the area with the hole and the side of the trailer because a nearby section protrudes inward. So when I tightened the bolt, it cracked the area around the hole badly. So I had to get some auto repair patch and build up the hole again. Doesn't look the best up close, but from 5-6 feet can't really notice (I am NOT an expert at body patching!).

The biggest advantage to the speed nuts is the fact that you can use your original screws (colored or not - ours are black on the Full Body Paint Big Sky).

I lost 3 fender trim screws in my first 600 miles. I replaced all with similar size stainless steel bolt & lock nut. Painted the head black to match others on trim. 10k + miles and no more issues. I like the idea above; sounds easier and just as effective.

Is there a specific size for the speed clips?

I cannot remember exactly, but when I purchased them, I took a fender screw to Lowes with me to make sure I got the correct size. There are different sizes available.

Most of mine are tight. They are just screwed into the fiberglass. I also use the Ge clear Silicone RTV and it works wonders.
