Anyone found a place to carry 2nd spare other than basement?
Think about this one guy/gals. I've carried two spares for years for the fifth wheels I've towed. Why?? Well, if you have a blow out, the other tire on the same side of the rig as the blowout now has to carry the entire weight of that side until you get it stopped, which may be several hundred feet. By then the good tire is likely to have sustained damage to it and will probably the next blowout just down the road. I've been thinking of way to put another spare on the Montana somewhere and get it out of the bed of the truck. I've researched Lippert's spare tire assembly with the winch, just like what is under there and it is reasonably priced. However, adding another tire in front of the factory one would not be doable as there is not enough room between the factory one and the rear axles, and putting one behind the factory one would drag the ground nearly everywhere. I don't want to put it forward of the rear wheels due to the breakover point of the trailer being so close to the wheels. I know some carry one in the basement and that's plausible, but I've wondered about moving the factory one over to one side and putting the other tire beside that one. I know the carrier would have to be totally redesigned to carry more weight, and the bolt on frame would have to use bigger bolts and a slightly different mounting point. Has anyone else thought about this besides me? Any other ideas??

How about a mount on your bumper? Helps get pin weight down also.

I thought about that but I am having a buddy(CAD drafter in machine fabrication shop) make me a mount to keep the blue tank on. It will be in the center and allow for the tank to be covered with a vinyl bag. That way I can get it out of the bed of the truck as well. However, that does bring up an idea that I might put the blue tank under the rig behind the axles and tire on the back

I agree that you can not be to prepared. I would not worry as much if you are running Goodyear g614 or Sailun s637 14 ply G rated tires. If you are running E rated china bombs, then you are going to need more than 2 spares. LOL

That's what I've always said, but 5 weeks ago the sidewall blew on my G614..only two years old..

I wouldn't worry as much about the tires as i would the wheels. I've had 2 wheels crack and cause me to have to install the spare in the last 2 years. The factory wheels on these rigs are junk so i started carrying an extra mounted spare . Yes i have the Sailuns and i have not had any problem with them in the last 4 years but anything can happenen. I recommend anyone that travels long distances with there rv to carry an extra mounted tire because it's not always easy to find an extra wheel. I carry my extra spare in the bed between the tailgate and the hitch but it will be a challenge to get another one under the rv but i am sure it can be done.

Hi
Looking at ours I would say in front of the existing mount.
You should be able to put the tire over the axle with the back edge on the ground and use the winch arrangement to lift it up until its hangs on the cable then swing it forward over the axel.
If you ever get in a position where the axel would hit the spare I would think your problem would be much greater than hitting the spare. LOL

Have you thought about the BAL hide a spare? I installed it and use it for the blue portable dump tank instead of a spare. It was super easy to install.
