domicile state

I am about to pass through South Dakota on my way to North Carolina. I am considering setting up a SD domicile. Where should I start? Is there a particular city to be visited? If you have done this, what issues or difficulties have you had to face? I need to know quickly, please.

Stiles, several of us are with Alternative Resources in Sioux Falls (3700 S. Westport Ave). Go to their website for particulars on what is needed now - www.alternativeresources.net - to get set up in South Dakota. We set up 7 years ago and had no problems. When you register your rig, take a picture of the weight certificate on the inside of the cabinet door and submit it with your paper work as it is required. They won't take out of state checks at the DMV and won't take PMB checks. If you go there in person to register truck & rig, have cash or a Discover card only. The Alternative Resources website has the information about costs of vehicle registration and what is required for driver's license. Good luck.

We have used Americas Mailbox in Rapid City for the past 4 years and have been very happy with them. In addition to mail handling, we use them to register our vehicles so that we don't have to stand in line at the Court House. It is a great service and is owned by a full-time RVer who understands what we need.

We have been with Alternative of Sioux Falls for 11 years- Have had no problems- We renew our vehicle plates via phone using a Mastercard- We return to renew our drivers license in person as required- There is much to see and do in the area so the visit is a pleasure- We vote also without problems- Red Barn campground is just off I-29 south of Sioux Falls- Yogi Bear is north of Sioux Falls off I-90- Tower campground is just off I-29 at 12th St exit- Good luck deciding which of the South Dakota mail services are best for y'all- I am also a native of Sioux Falls so I may be prejudiced (sp?)- Don

Stiles, don't you own land in TX?? That may or MAY NOT have some weight in your decision.

As a true nomad, I own no land. I did not know you had to renew your driver's license in person.

You can renew a Texas driver's license via mail. However, if you have a CDL you must renew in person.

this past December, a new law went into effect in South Dakota. Not only do you have to renew your license in person but you have to have either 2 forms of ID along with your SS Card or a current Passport. By the way, you only have to renew in person this first time (any time after Dec 2009). From that point your ID info is on computer file with SD DMV and you can renew remotely.

Bob n Pam they also take Visa (and maybe MasterCard, not sure). I paid my registration with Visa this year. It used to be only Discover.

We've used Alternative Resources in South Dakota since early 2003.

Stiles, if you go to AR they will tell you everything you need to know. We went from there to the courthouse and found those folks very helpful and friendly. One even recognized our new address and said "you must be rv'ers" and helped us get through everything. We started at AR at around 8 or 8:30 am and were on our way back to Kansas by noon.

You also don't need to go back to Sioux Falls for d/l renewal. You can go to any county that does the testing and that information is online. When Steve needed to renew, we went to Elk County (I think that's it), in the southwest corner of the state ... saved lots of time and miles.

It was Elk County but in the southeast corner, about 15 miles or less north of Sioux City, IA.

We are with mydakotaaddress.com with Terry Lund. We have now been with them for over a year. Terry and her staff have been wonderful. Even going so far as to send in a bank deposit for us. The are located in Madison SD. We were in SD for 1 day and got everything completed.

We have no complaints, just compliments.
