Diesel Kleen

Started using this, has increased MPG by 2 and engine runs smoother.
2004 F-350, 6.4

Just passing it on

I have used this on and off in my 2001 gmc duramax. I noticed an increase in my and the injectors ran quieter. Since i got my 2012 Ram, i have used it once . Mileage shlwed an increase but couldn't tell much about the injectors, as i can barely hear them.
It increases the cetane level (octane?) And improves stiction (lubrication) in the injectors that the higher sulphur level diesel used to provide. I may go back to it during the winter, but want to see what my first fuel filter change looked like.

Been using diesel kleen from day one .It is a Cetane booster and was recommended by our Ford Dealership. These newer diesels need 45 cetance to run properly and the norm is @ 40/41. Shell does a premimum diesl that is 45 cetane as does Sunoco...If you can find it. There is no doubt that the truck runs better with the proper cetance levels. We do note our MPG drops a bit if we do not use it.

Diesel Kleen, you bet I use it, every tank especially when towing. As for quieting injectors, not so much on the 7.3 Ford. MPG gains have'nt really noticed with Diesel Kleen, but I have noticed gains with a most recent installation of a Tony Wildman 7.3 Ford Diesel Chip.

I have a big Cummins in the MH (8.9L ISL). The manual says the cetane rating should be a minimum of 42 if above 32* and 45 if below 32*. It also says no additives, although some use them and some don't. I haven't used any yet, although I did use Stanadyne in my D/A. BTW, there is no such thing as "premium" diesel...diesel is diesel.

\Maybe not..The shell pumps are marked premimum diesel and is 45 cetane. Just like gas is regular and premimum.gas higher octane..Diesel higher cetane.

http://alternativefuels.about.com/od...t/a/cetane.htm

Do some research on cetane and what is required in the newer diesels.

This is from a Dodge/Cummins site, also included are some fuel additive comments:

"Q: How much does a gallon of diesel fuel weigh?

It varies somewhat, but averages around 7.1 lb per US gallon.

Q: What is premium diesel fuel?

There is no definition of premium fuel, so the term really means nothing and is over used by suppliers.

Cummins says that fuel additives are not needed in their engines. Almost all diesel technicians (including many Cummins service technicians) agree that while they are not needed, additives help reduce problems caused by fuel contamination, cold weather, and lack of lubricity in modern lo-sulfur fuels."

I just bought some for the first time. Walmart has a 946ml container for around $10. The recommendations are 250ml per 100L of fuel so the cost to use the stuff is about $2.50+- a fill. 100ml = 26.5 US gallons. Hopefully it'll do something positive and if it only keeps the injectors clean, I'll be happy.

Actually premium diesel fuel is defined. A google search will bring up many sources for the definition instead of just mine. According to a friend of ours who was a Shell oil manager involved in the refining process it is generally accepted that a cetane rating of 45 or over is defined as premium. There is still controversy over the needed level of cetane and some indicate that a cetane rating of 50 + is wasted in some diesel motors.

All I can say by actual experimentation is that our 08 6.4 diesel runs much better with the Diesel kleen additive and when in Florida we use Shell Premium and do not need the additive. Just our experience..others may differ.

Pugtracker you must have the year wrong if your 2004 F350 is a 6.4? Maybe an 08?

The Cenex station in Hutchinson, MN sells "premium" diesel. It's six cents more than the normal diesel. By "premium" I'm not sure what is meant. I assume it has a higher cetane rating.

I've never used a cetane booster, but I do swear by Lucas Fuel Treatment. Have been using it since 2003 with good results. Seems to save the injectors. I usually put in three to five ounces every other fill up.

I started using it after attending a seminar hosted by a company out of Pennsylvania (don't remember the name) who raced diesels. I thought if it was good enough for them then it was good enough for me to try. Glad I did.

Have used in all my diesel trucks. While ford initially told me not to use with my 7.3, my dealer now strongly recommends using with both the 6.0 and the new 6.7. Since I have been using for years, cannot make a comparison re using or not using.

Ray, in my old 04.5 5.9 ctd I always put in 6-8 ounces of power service every tank full.

OK, now I'm getting excited. I read this thread the other day and though to my self...."self, get some of this Diesel Kleen and try it". So I did. I put some in the tank and filled 'er up. I then hauled the fiver 120 miles, 15 or so through one heck of a thunder storm with heavy rain. I got 10 MPG on the 'lie-o-meter'. Not bad, I usually get 8 - 8.5 when towing. OK, so today we leave the campsite and drive 230 miles out and back just sight seeing, shopping and dinner (Erie, PA. to Buffalo, NY and back). HOLY COW! 17 MPG.....no way. I normally average 12, 13 on a good day. And the best part, I only had ONE REGEN in that 230 miles. In the past it would regen every 80 - 100 miles. I don't know if it did a regen on the day I towed; I was too involved with getting through the storm (but I never saw a message in the message center that it was cleaning the exhaust filter).

These results are very exciting but I have to ask myself if something else is going on here. I don't know what could be giving me these improved numbers but I think I will continue with Diesel Kleen for a while and see if the numbers remain this good. Or maybe an alien was watching me and zapped my truck with his laser beam pushing me along. That has happened before you know. Time will tell.

Like Orv I went with Lucas fuel treatment on the recommendation of an OTR driver. He drives for a large trucking firm and said their maintenance department provides it for their fleet.

I notice a difference in the way my Cummins runs with the additive. YMMV. I add it at every fill up. A waste of money? Mine to waste.

I know some of you guys are like me and wondered, "what is YMMV?" So I looked it up, Your Mileage May Vary, found it here: http://www.gaarde.org/acronyms/?lookup=D
