I broke my truck

I backed my truck up the driveway Sunday and washed it.

When I was finished, the truck cranked but wouldn't start.

Towed it to the shop and they tell me they're having trouble diagnosing because of my Edge chip. Poop. What's the story there? I was out all afternoon and forgot to call them, but can't you just disconnect the wiring and it's out of circuit?

I'm beginning to think I broke the truck when I washed it. But that doesn't make sense, does it???

Don't know which is worse the trucks or the mechanics anymore. Seems no one can figure out mechanical problems anymore unless you can plug it into a computer. Not sure if vehicles are just that high tech or if the mechanics are just not mechanics anymore....oh my brother corrects me all the time that he is a "technician" not a mechanic. Well sometimes you just need a good mechanic. I'm sure they will get you fixed up sooner or later, just hope it is sooner.

Pat,
They're feeding you a line. The chip doesn't stop them from diagnosing. I have the Banks chip and was told once that the chip stopped them from getting the diagnostics to work. Then when confronted with Banks information they said, "Oh, I see." Have never been told again that the diagnostics didn't work. It's because it's after-market equipment that's been installed and they want to blame their ineptness on something.

I sent them the installation instructions yesterday; see what happens. The guy's worked on my van before and hasn't done me bad before.

The only way washing might cause that is if you hosed down the engine, and I will bet you did not do that.

But the engine was... dirty....?

JUST SO NO ONE ACTUALLY THINKS THIS.... I did not wash the engine.

I did that once, but it was a long time ago...

Even that shouldn't be a problem unless you had a problem to start with. Often times you wash the engine when you hit a mud puddle. Oh, that's right, it doesn't rain anymore.

I wash my engine every time I wash the truck but you haft to be careful that the engine is cool. If you spray water on the fuel pump while it is hot it can warp it and that will ruin it.

For going the dealers problem with the chip. How old are your batteries? I know on my truck when the batteries are needing replacing, the engine will crank, but will not turn over.

Pat have you received any updates from Mr. Goodwrench yet? My personal thoughts about this is that there useing the chip as a way of trying to get out of fixing it, they would have to prove that the chip caused the problem first then decline fixing it on warrintee I would think.

If your dealer refuses to fix your truck because you have a chip, that is easy, just get another dealer.

Pat,
A buddy of mine just had to have his truck worked on today. Pulled out from under his 5th wheel and it just died. Crank and crank and crank but no start. Mechanic friend of mine told him pump the top of his fuel filter housing until it got hard to pump. Truck started right up, drove it to same mechanic who replaced the fuel filter housing. Said he replaced about 10 of them last week. He said when they go out it will pull air in which I think is similar to the old carbs vapor locking. Something you might check. His truck is also a Chevy Duramax.

Back from the shop. My problem was a leak in the fuel line near the tank which was sucking air into the system. I tried priming the filter but that didn't work; not much else I know how to do.

But it's running fine now.

Glad to hear you're back in business. Seems these days dealers are 'remove and replace' specialists. The employee 'technicians' not mechanics. In my younger days a mechanic could: 1. find the problem, 2: in most cases, repair the defective part, and 3: charge a reasonable price for his service. Today the technicians use computers to tell them every step of the process. And the manufacturers design everything to be throw away. My sister-in=law's 6 CD AM/FM radio got a CD stuck in it. The dealer wanted $470+ to replace the radio. I removed the radio, opened the top, removed the stuck CD, and replaced the unit......all in about 20 minutes. Six years later it worked just fine. Point is, THEY wouldn't even look at it, just 'remove and replace'.
