Grease hitch jaws?
Okay Montana owners, I need to answer a question. I saw in a Trailer Life article that you should use the pin disk (I do that) AND lubricate the kingpin. Do any of you do that? I haven't over all these years and am wondering if I should. Thanks for your responses.

I grease my king pin. After I get unhitched and set up, I put a soup can on it to keep dirt off and grease off my shirt

We have the Patriot 20K B&W hitch, I've put a squirt of grease on the inside of the locking jaws where it meets the king pin. We also have the pin disk at the king pin. I don't know if it's the right thing to do, but it has to be better than rusty components.

I haven't read that article, but I guess I am just too "old school". I always put a couple dabs of grease on the face of the plate and used a heavy spray grease on my king pin and locking jaws. Never really believed in the plastic disks. My only experience with similar hitches was driving large military vehicles in early 70's so I guess I reverted back to that. Probably not the best method.

I decided to use the disk just because of the grease, figured it would be all over my shirt whenever I was messing around the front basement compartment. When we had the TT, I used to grease the hitch ball, but after having to replace the DW's jeans several times from her brushing by the truck in the garage, I quit greasing it so I figured the same would happen with my shirts.

I use the disc and a spray of Silicone Lube seems to have work fine for a lot of years. B4 hitching I take paper towel and wipe the disc and the hitch plate then spray. One time their was sand on the disc was like using sand paper on the disc I replaced the disc if I remember their are two diameters of disc use the large one!

I use a disc and put a little white lithium grease on the king pin. Metal on metal just seems like it should have a little lube there.

I grease the king pin and use a spray on the saddle. Works for me.

There's very little contact surface on the actual pin to jaws and I believe the pin and jaws get even wear as the truck and FW chuck down road. Evan though not specified in my hitch manual, I spray the moving parts with white lithium grease if I have to leave the hitch in the weather.

Here's a video from B&W Hitches. Note at the 2:50 time point:
Using the lub plate is fine where the surfaces meet but inside the jaws.....use a light coat of grease.

The great thing about the disks is you don't need to put grease on the surface of your hitch or the underside of the pin box. My Curt has a couple of zerks on each of the swiveling jaw shaft mounts and one in the center for the linkage. I grease those at least once a year, maybe twice, and put some on the king pin itself. Don't need synthetic or anything expensive - if any of these parts start moving real fast, you're probably in some other kind of serious trouble.

I have decided to switch my hitch out for an Anderson. I'm getting too old to keep picking that thing in and out of my pickup and Anderson only weighs 40 pounds. No grease.

My hitch has the plastic already on top of it. It was designed that way. That leaves a dab of grease for the jaws or some dryly be spray if you prefer.
