Nifty low clearance site

This company has compiled the most comprehenive list of low clearance places. It can be used on your gps and your mapping program. You can set the clearance you want for your rig and your gps will alert you if a low clearance situation is coming up. It's not free, but may be worth it.

I've been using them for almost a year. There has been about 4 updates in that time the latest being 10/1. It is $19.95/yr and so far there are about 4450 entries. You can select the bridge hts you want to save so if you're only concerned with bridges under 13'6" you can set it up accordingly.

If you're a regular user of a gps and trust them than it's not a bad investment. On the other hand you can purchase the truckers road atlas for about the same amount of money. We find ourselves using the regular atlas, gps and Delorme Streets and compare. We aren't happy with any one product but we think there is a happy medium when using more than one. We have not had the occassion to experience the low clearance warning. YEA!!!!!

The Nov/Dec 2010 Escapees Magazine has a nice article about Low Clearances. I am going to add it to my DeLorme GPS. Glad to see others are using it and like it.

I use the American Independent Trucker's Association web site for my planning purposes. It is updated frequently.

That may be just major truck routes, but it has worked for me. I'll watch for those yellow caution signs.

Downloaded the data and installed it my Garmin last night. I set mine to snow me anything 13'6" and less. Now I need to test it without the camper. I also need to get an accurate height measurement of the camper, when it gets warmer. I know 13'6" was good last year because that was the height of the tunnel I went thru.

Agee with the confusion! I just did it in my Garmin. Print the instructions and read them a few times before you start.

You down load their file after you get an account and follow their instructions continuing to the download portion. You make a POI file/Icon? There was a POI on mine that I didn't use so I deleted it and made a new POI with the Low Clearance data in it. Not sure if you can have multiple things in the POI file?

After downloading their file you open it and the list shows the different heights, my understanding is you pick the minimum height you want, I selected 13' 6" and copied the two files (highlight) and pasted them into my POI folder I made. The Gamin will let you write the POI folder with the data into it via the USB port.

Now I have to do a road test but have to drive 30 miles to do it! Trial and error worked for me and I worked in electronics and with computers most of my life.

Good Luck

I received a Tom Tom GPS for Christmas. I contacted them for the low clearance alert and they told me that they didn't have one available. Thanks for the link. I've downloaded it to my GPS and now have to make it work.

I now can't make the data download into my "maps" as indicated in the instruction, and then load it into my Tom Tom device. Any suggestions? I hope I can make it work, but if not, I'll cancel the subscription and use the truckers road atlas to plan the daily trips. My spouse doesn't do maps well and her eyesight isn't the greatest for finding the small pring on most atlases.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the info. I now have it downloaded into my Garmin. Has anyone road tested it yet?

I might have a chance tomorrow. There is a low railroad bridge in Fredericksburg, VA. It's in the city but will be fun to find out if it listed. Trucks travel this road but not sure the big rigs do. I saw a fiver in the city one time, I am sure he had not planned to be downtown with it, big mistake, narrow streets and no turning radius and intersections. All main roads bypass the city, you have to really want to go in town to do it.

I was wrong, tried every overpass in Fredericksburg all three said 13.6' so still looking to check this feature out. One that said 13.6'didn't take into consideration the length of the trailer since it was at the bottom of a dip in the road. I am sure we would span the dip and hit, something else to think about.

I think I found a low bridge to check out the feature. Remembered a railroad overpass I went under several years ago that had low clearance signs and lots of scares on it. I plan to go there this week, without the camper, to check and see what happens.

Went to the railroad overpass today. Sign on road before you would turn onto it warned that clearance is 9'2". I had it one my selected route and it didn't indicated problem on my GPS.
The road was closed at the overpass, think due to some flooding? I plan to email Low Clearance with location so they can add it. There are ways to get to either side without using this road and signs are posted before you turn on to the road. I remember from years back that there were indications of it being struck but didn't remember it being that low.
