Fender to skirt screws

Replaced the sheet metal screws today, didn't want my fenders departing the trailer....lol
Can't believe the lack of caring by workers at Keystone.
The extruded Alu. braces coming down from frame were digging in and going to eventually perforate the skirting or fender depending on location, bent each one to actually support and keep the bottom in alignment.
Replaced the screws with 8-24 SS bolts, washers and nylock nuts.
Also replaced the exterior screws attaching the furnace cover w/ss as they were starting to show rust here with the salt air.

This is a much covered issue on the forum. I stayed with the OEM screws just added the cheap locking washers behind them with a dab of silicone on the back side. No rust no more backing out. They are on my list of regular items to check before rolling down the road now. I am in the PNW where it is often wet and we frequent both the OR and WA coasts, no sign of rusting except for the stairs buts that's another story.

Yup necessary thing to do. I put speed nuts on the new rig before I even left the dealers lot.

Thought about the speed nuts, but all the hardware was only $14 and now flat washers under bolts and nuts

Some speed nuts were present,

Got some speed nuts today to use on my fender skirts. I was surprised to find speed nut backup already present on most of the screws - there was 11 screws per skirt and 8 or 9 screws already had speed nuts on them. The hard to reach screws did not have nuts. I found 3 screws that were loose. I tightened up everything and added nuts to the others, then dabbed some silicone on each. I found one screw head that was twisted off (screw that holds the bottom of the rubber gasket at the rear cap) so I added a new screw there.

I don’t recall reading any previous posts from folks who discovered nuts already installed - I was pleasantly surprised!

After reading this thread and others on this forum, I replaced ours today with stainless steel machine bolts, washers, and nylon locking nuts. I wont worry bout the skirts any more! I appreciate this forum! I have made many improvements based on the topics discussed! Much appreciated!

The problem that I had was I bumped the left rear corner while pulling out of our very narrow driveway, was not much damage, I got out and looked, something I can fix when I get home. The problem was when we reached the campground was the lower panel down the left lower side was hanging out and down. It didn't drop all the way to the ground but very embarrassing as drivers went by and stared. When I got all parked and checked out the panel, I pulled off the rubber strip to see what was going on and found that the lower panel screws were not held in place buy the aluminum strip screws. For the time being I just threw in a couple of screws to hold it.

I installed stainless steel bolts, flatwashers and locking nylon nuts a couple of years ago. Do it right and do it once and forget about it.

I lost 4 screws (2 on each side) just on my 45 mile trip home from the dealer. But once I got into the forum it didn’t take long to find a solution. Thanks.

I had lost 5 on my plastic fenders on my way home from the dealer, but these are in the aluminum panel that is about 8-10' long.

I didn't want to swap out screws due to matching color so I used wife finger nail polish and coated threads. So far so good.

BTW the loose screw problem was the same on our 2006 3400 as it was on our 13 3402 Big sky. No improvement what so ever.

Did almost the same but used clear silicone caulk and no problems so far.
