Which is the best route to Tucson Ar,take the most southern I30,I20,I10 trough Texas.or more northen.WE are going end Feb,1st Mar.2014 John R.

The Northern route [ I-40 ] goes through Flagstaff, Az- This area has some horrific snow with corresponding road closures during the winter months- We usually take the southern route for that reason- JMHO- Don

Just re-read your post- If Tucson is your destination, I would still take the southern route because of warmer weather and lower altitudes- Still JMHO- Don

I'd go southern. I-40 in Oklahoma and New Mexico can have snow that time of year, but the bigger problem is really strong winds. We've had to wait several days in middle New Mexico, that time of year, for 60mph winds to die down before we could continue the trip.

Just a reminder to keep diesel full. We got in one stretch in Texas on I10 heading to Fort Stockton and almost ran out. Had to go 20 miles off the interstate to get fuel. The southern route is a good way to go. Enjoy Tucson.

We travel both I 10 and I 20. I prefer I 20 because there are some good reasonably priced RV parks. For some reason diesel seems to be cheaper on I 20 than I 10. Make sure you take the by-pass through El Paso.

I-10 is a very popular route especially in winter and goes from El Paso to San Antonio - it gets a lot of traffic. I-20 goes from El Paso to Dallas. I'd recommend going south to at least Dallas before heading to Tucson. I wouldn't use I-40 unless you need tires and want to stop at LonnieB's tire shop in Texico, New Mexico and since it runs more north than either of the others, it's riskier for bad weather especially in New Mexico and Arizona (haven't done Texas/Oklahoma for I-40 in cold weather).
Driving in winter weather cuts through whatever I'm wearing and I don't like the feel of the cold fuel pumps on my bare hands when I forget to put on gloves.
Though I wish I could, I've never bypassed El Paso. DW has lots of family there and when traveling through we gotta dine with one or more of them. I wonder if it's the 375 state loop? I've never been on it, but I don't like the look of the road through the north western part of El Paso through the Franklin mountains. One nervewracking part I find driving through El Paso is no lane control and semis go flying by me even in any lane (including the fast lane).

Unless you are already close to the coast and near I-10, I would also recommend I-20 across Texas. However ice/snow storms along I-20 are certainly possible during Feb/early March. But it is usually something that last no more than a couple days before the highway is clear again. Just check the weather forecast for the few days ahead of your travel and make your decision then. If you are in no particular hurry just pull into a convenient RV park if a storm is approaching and wait a couple days for it to clear rather than take a significant detour to get down to I-10.

I am not Bill and Jan but I can pretend to be them. They posted the following in another topic.
By Pass around El Paso, Texas. If you are coming eastbound on I 10 here's the best way to get around El Paso. Sharon Del Rosario, former solo Montana owner gave us this route from Carlsbad: I assume you'll be coming into El Paso from US 180. Take Loop 375 north (right turn). Turn right (north) on US-54. Exit on MLK Jr Blvd (FM-3255) going north. When you enter NM the road becomes NM-213. Turn left (west) on Ohara Rd (NM-404). This will take you over a very gentle hill to I-10 entering at exit #162 slightly north of Anthony, NM.

I have looked at parts of this proposed route before.
I wonder, does this put you out NORTH of the NM Welcome center/rest area?
Any one know, is Fort Bliss Castner Range a closed area?? And, what is the driving like through Franklin Mountains State Park. I ask because there is what appears to be an extension of 375 through there.
Anyone with personal knowledge??

After rereading the original posts about I-30 I-20 I-10, sounds like he is speaking of I-30 from Arkansas (Little Rock area?) to Dallas, then I-20 west to where it merges with I-10 west of Pecos. And alternately a northern route of I-40 thru OK and TX panhandle into NM.
If that is the case, my comments remain about the possible ice/snow on I-20, but also for I-30 and I-10 approaching El Paso for that time of year. But less likely than I-40.
But by watching the weather forecast you may find there will be good weather for either route. From I-40 you could drop down to I-20 from Amarillo or to I-10 from Albuquerque. It would only take 3, maybe 4, days to cross that distance depending on how far you go in a day.
Neither route will provide much in the way of scenery or much reason to slow down. Not much difference in distance. Some people do not like to go thru Dallas/Ft Worth for fear of traffic. But passing thru mid day you should have little to no problem.
So if the weather forecast looks good go for whatever strikes you at the moment. If a snowy/icy front is moving in go for the southern route but still be prepared to maybe stop over a day or two.

It sounds as if we are taking the southern route Dallas,El Paso,Tucson,We have been to Brownsville Tx so fuel is no problem as long as you keep an eye on the gauges,350L so a fillup is about 950 miles,1500kms.Thanks to all the info looking forward to see Arizona.John R.
