Best Route SC to Maine

We're planning a trip from Summerville, SC to Bar Harbor, Maine in August. I'm looking from some suggestions on the route to take. We were thinking about going up I81 and not I95. We're are open to any ideas for now.

You can take I-81 North to I-78 East in Harrisburg, PA to I-287 North up to I-84 East in Newburgh -- Take I-691 to I-91, back to I-84 around Hartford - Get on I-90 East to I-290 to I-495 to I-95 North

When in Maine, you have choices, either stay on I-95 to Bangor and take 1A towards Ellsworth / Bar Harbor or take the Coastal Route (Route 1)north of Portland

We took US 1 and it was great. One caveat: there is one low bridge that took us about 45 minutes to get around. Sorry, can't remember where it was and our GPS didn't give us a low clearance warning.

On a side note we have travelled from way up in Maine to the Keys and most of it was on US 1. Loved it!

I think there is a low bridge on Route 1 just South of Portsmouth NH - by staying on Route 95 into Maine - they would miss it

That's sounds good. I was not sure about I81 and mountains. We'll ether take I95 or US 1 in maine. I should be able to google the bridge.
Thanks

I normally take I-95 (I-295 around Richmond) to US 17 in Fredericksburg to I-66 to I-81, the hills are not bad at all -- there is some construction on I-81 near Martinsburg, WV - but they did keep at least 2 lanes open
