Ideas on I80 East from CA ???
Hi all...
We're in Santa Cruz, CA (Monterrey Bay) and plan on going back to VA via I80 thru Nevada, then N up I15 thru I90 Montana thru S. Dakota.
Has anyone been this route in April?? We want to pick up new tags and licenses in S. Dakota by end of April, but not sure what I80 and I15 hold for grades and such....
any help much appreciated!!!!!

Tedd & Lillian,
I do not see any trouble with this route you are thinking of taking. I drive from Spokane, WA. to Rapid City, So. Dak at least 3 times per year with one of those trips going onto Chicago IL. via I-29 south right there at Sioux Falls, S.D. to the I-680 bypass in Iowa to catch back up with I-80 right outside of Council Bluffs. The big mountain pass you will come to will be east of Butte, Montana. This is the Continental Divide which will run you up to 6,600ft mark if memory is correct. I have towed this pass twice last year without trouble. Once you come down and hit Bozemann, MT the rest of your roads are pretty much open and flat, with the exception of a few hills. I have to think this route is one of my most enjoyable trips I do each year. Best of luck on which ever way your route takes you.

Tedd and Lillian I see no problem with crossing Nevada On I-80 I have traveled that route many times. There are a few steep grades but none that will cause any problems.

Tedd & Lillian, we've towed most of that, too. You should have no problems. There is some beautiful scenery along your route, particularly in Montana. Have fun.
Another, gorgeous, route is to pick up I-70 in Utah and take it to Denver, then cut north. That is one absolutely gorgeous drive. I-70 will take you up over Vail pass at over 11,000 feet but what a beautiful drive! Before you let that scare you off, with your diesel you'll have no problems. We even towed our 13,980lb 3295RK over that pass from west to east with a V10 gasser.
