I-85 ATL collapses during fire-closed indefinitely

Interstate 85 at Piedmont Road collapsed tonight after a huge conduit and water pipe storage site burns. The roadway collapsed within an hour. Both sides of the interstate are closed indefinitely. Make alternate plans when traveling through the ATL area.

I will be traveling up that way on Sunday from Panama City Beach Florida to Charlotte NC. I had planned to take I85 to I285 around Atlanta and get back on I85 north of Atlanta. I have never traveled this area before. Will this directly affect my plans?

Your plan will work. I'll be passing through from I20E to I-75S on Sunday.

Probably a good time to get through there. Just checked and the Braves aren't playing.

The Braves no longer use Turner Field downtown. They have moved into SunTrust Stadium in Cobb County at I-75 and I-285.

Thanks. I knew they moved, but of course, I had no idea where the new stadium ballpark was.

We are stopping in Austell GA, which is a few miles west of Atlanta off of the I-285 bypass (west side). Wonder how much additional traffic build up will be over onto that west bypass due to this closure in the city?

If going through this weekend, it won't be nearly as bad as a weekday that's for sure.

Unfortunately it will be a Monday, and probably around 4:30 or 5pm. If I could change the timing I would but we can't. Since there are so many leaving Florida in the next couple of weeks maybe someone will post some feedback on it.

I would hate to know I had to pull a camper on I285 at that time during work day. I try to plan on going through Atlanta early on a Sunday. Good luck and a valume may help. Just kidding.

It's going to be bad and that time of day is the worst. You really have 3 choices. I-285 across the north side. It's the shortest, and this part of I-285 has always had the worst traffic. I would guess it will be impacted the worst. 2nd would be to take I-285 south to I-20 and then go west. A bit longer than the north I-285 option. Traffic on I-20 used to good (by ATL standards), but I think it will be impacted somewhat. 3rd would be I-285 all the way around the south side. By far the longest, but will be impacted the least. I saw a google traffic map Fri. that had just about everything north of I-20 at a crawl.

Most of the metro Atlanta school systems are on spring break next week. That will help the traffic situation a bit, especially on the west side.

Check the weather reports. Severe storms are predicted in the Atlanta area during the afternoon on Monday.

Just came back from Daytona and the traffic in Georgia was stop and go for the entire state and SC. Had to get off and go east to get back to NC. That bridge collapse is causing all sort of problems everywhere.

Just got off I85 north of Atlanta for the night. Traffic was not bad at all. There was a severe backup southbound around the 115 mile marker due to a Uhaul rental van that had rolled over.

Came through ATL from the west on 20 to 75S headed to FL. I was there around noon. No traffic until well south of town. Never could figure out what the hold up was. Norhtbound 75 didn't look so great though.

Coming up 75 north and then hit 85 north I never ever go thru Atlanta. I always get of at Macon and then to Milledgeville and then Augusta and back roads north of Augusta. Its a lot of 4 lane and some back roads but all good roads and NO traffic ever. Just went that way today coming back for Warner Robins Ga. I hate Atlanta, been burned way to many times with traffic and idiots. I love back roads and seeing some country rather then traffic. Might take a few minutes longer, but on average back roads are quicker then going through Atlanta. JMO
