Contaminated Diesel

A friend of mine has had the misfortune of buying contaminated diesel in his brand new F350 dually. $10,000 so far to repair the damage. Hes not sure where he bought the fuel but he's currently stranded in Louisana.

That's terrible.
What was it contaminated with?

Does he buy from any no-name stations? I only buy from name brand (Shell, Exxon, etc) on the assumption that they have a dedicated supply system and name to protect and are less likely to have “bad” diesel than an unbranded station getting fuel from where ever they get it. May be living in dreamland, but have never got bad diesel or gasoline.

I do the same thing and in the last 9 years I haven't had a problem. With that being said I only buy from stations that are well used and not the out of way Mom and Pop places.

I took my husband's diesel Ford to an Amoco one time and the diesel pumps were off to the side of the station. I jumped out of the truck and put the hose In the truck and started pumping. While it was pumping I was reading stuff on the pump when I realized that it didn't show some of the things that are normally on a passenger vehicle pump. I looked up and realized I was pumping Racing Gas into the truck! I immediately stopped the pump and stood there scared to death, $$$$ running through my head. There was a tanker there so I went over to talk to the driver but he had no idea what I should do. I ended up calling the dealership. He asked me how empty the tank was (it was on E) and how much gas I put in it. I had put in about 5 gal ($25 worth!). He said to go ahead and fill it with diesel and I should be OK. He said it was better to put gas in a diesel than diesel in a gas vehicle. Whew, that was a load off my shoulders. My husband said it ran fine except that it had a lot of pep through that tank.

We only purchase diesel at truck stops mostly Pilot/FJ since there seem to be more of them. Here in Florida we purchase Shell premium diesel at a station that is a high volume.

We have not in 11 years had a problem.

If you happen to get contaminated Diesel your factory warranty will not cover the damage. It’s considered abuse just like you dumped water in it or acid rain. The manufacturer don’t consider it their fault. These new high pressure fuel systems are extremely fragile. They run at pressures at 25000 PSI or over and are made to extremely tight tolerances and will tolerate no abuse. I replaced my OEM filters with much larger 2 micron filters. Will that prevent this from happening every time? No but it might help.

Have had a Diesel Dually for 12 years and even had a Buick with the 350 Gas engine that GM converted to Diesel as a commuter car that I put 150K on and have never had any fuel problems with any. Been following the advice when we got the Buick, "Only purchase for High Volume Stations, with good turnover".

The problem originates at the station not the refinery. Brand name or no name, they still get their fuel from the same refinery. Branded stations, even though they may be privately owned have to adhere to the brands standards. Some Mom And Pop stations may be operating on a shoestring budget and cut corners with their storage maintenance. Paying a few cents more per fill up at a major station is cheap insurance. The station I use (Quick Trip truck stop) gets 2 or 3 tanker loads of diesel per day!

We had the same problem with our Dodge. $8,500 later it was running fine. We now have 150,000 additional mile with no problems, but we did install a delete kit.

I've been run diesel trucks for 13 years now. Still do what was sujested when I got the first one. Always get a receipt and keep it in the door until I fill up again. That way you know where you got your tank filled.

I also get and keep a receipt. Additionally I always do a visual test as soon as the fuel starts flowing and a "sniff" test. Can't be too careful!

Yes, I wear a belt AND suspenders. LOL

This is real good advice. If you get bad fuel the station is responsible. Go back to the stat and get a can of fuel for evidence. Turn it in to your insurance co.

Fill up when you are 1/2 tank. I got bad fuel in Alaska and fixed it by pouring in 4 quarts of Stanadyne and changing filters. Drove it 100 k after that. What did they replace for $8,500 injection pump? Diesels are very tolerant engines if they get contaminated fuel they will sputter and run poorly but they will usually get over it. Just my 4 cents. BTW last truck had 1 million miles cummins 5.9 still running but put out to pasture montana too heavy for the old girl.

New Diesel engines are NOT tolerant of bad fuel. The old ones with gear pumps were. The new ones running 25,000 PSI fuel pressure are certainly not tolerant of any fuel contamination. What is replaced is the high pressure fuel pump and all the fuel lines. They are all one use lines. When you take the off throw them away and get new ones. Your old Cummings engine would tolerate dirty fuel or fuel with water in it. Your new engine will NOT. You almost couldn’t hurt an old
Diesel engine now they are very fragile.

I take what is perhaps an overkill approach. I seldom ever pump directly into the main tank. I pump into my auxiliary tank and pump from that into my main tank. I have the aux tank equipped with fuel and water separators as the first stage then into the final fuel filter before pumping into the main tank. That way fuel is filtered twice before actually getting into the trucks two filters. BTW, according to some Cummins reading on another forum, be careful using overly restrictive fuel filters, i.e., 2 microns or so, some have experienced fuel starvation. Just sayin'.

No one mentioned having a locking fuel cap on their trucks. I have a new 2016 RAM 3500 dually with the Cummins etc., and the darn thing does not have a locking fuel door, and just has a flimsy push in plastic plug for the tank? So I installed a polished billet aluminum locking fuel door. You don't know what some devious kids might pour into your tanks?

My 2013 RAM 3500 6.7L diesel has one of the spring loaded push in "dust" caps in the filler tube. That's the only thing I don't like about the truck. I pulled the truck and camper into a Blue Beacon truck wash one day. I watched the pickup truck ahead of me get a thorough wash - including the guy opening the fuel tank door and washing it out with a high pressure hose.

I guess he thought he was doing good....

I always wash inside my fuel door but make sure the cap is on first. Had a locking gas cap freeze on me once and strand me until I could get it thawed out - no locking gas caps for me if it involves a key.
