World's dumbest waste tank question

As I have time to look over my 2006 329RLT Mountaineer, I am finding stuff and having questions. It appears that the previous owner of this beast replaced the handles on the waste tank valves with handles that do NOT say "black" or "gray."

Not wanting to remove all the corrugated plastic underneath the trailer and trace plumbing, at least not today!

Can anyone tell me which handle is which?

This is a great question to ask to see how this group handles mentally-challenged newbies....

If you have all empty tanks, put a hose in the toilet and fill with water and some food coloring of your choice. Then fill the bath tub or shower with water and no coloring. Pull one of the handles, and if clear, that is your gray tank drain, if colored like what you put in the toilet, that is your black tank drain. You will need a clear fitting in your drain hose to see the drain water, which is good for normal use anyway.

Normally, the left handle is the black tank and the right handle is the gray tank for the bathroom. Let us know what you find out with your food coloring test!

Personally, if you put a clear fitting on the drain where the hose hooks on, you will not need food coloring to tell the difference almost instantaneously! I had a 2010 329rlt, and my memory is black left, gray right, but I'm also 72 so my memory's not worth much!

On ours left is black, right is gray and on the street side frame in front of the first tire is a drain handle for the galley tank.

We have a 2008, 329 RLT and the left handle is the black tank and the right handle is the grey tank. Their is also another grey tank handle underneath the trailer just in front of the left front wheel.

Send a message via Yahoo to NCFischers
By the way, the only dumb question is the one not asked.

Use the "sniff test" and you won't need food coloring!

The food coloring trick works great to identify which tank is which. We used different colors down each drain and john then pulled handles one at a time to identify which was which.

Yes, black tank handle on left side, and also recommend a bayonet style knife valve affixed to trailer drain, and a clear connection on slinky to see the flow and know when flush turns to nearly clear water. With those two additions you will have much more control. Also, with the bayonet valve attached you can use it to back-flush the black tank from the grey tank.

We also use the valve on the sewer exit and a clear 90.
