Clearance(Sub-titled "You can't fix stupid")

http://www.mlive.com/news/flint/inde...l#incart_river

Quote: Flint Traffic Sgt. Jason Groulx said the truck was stacked over 15 feet high with metal racks when it went under the Court Street bridge, which has a clearance of 14 feet, 2 inches high.

It is illegal in Michigan to carry a load stacked higher than 13 feet 6 inches without a special permit, said Groulx.

A "professional" driver doesn't measure or know his load and jeopardizes other drivers. You can't make this stuff up folks! I drove by this earlier today, the truck that struck one or more of the parts racks looked like it had hit the semi itself.

Pontiac, MI used to have a railroad bridge that was 10' 8" (IIRC), and despite all kinds of warning signs, it got hit on average of once every week or two. I worked for a brief period of time in a building across the street and we saw numerous accidents, and that was just during working hours. Worst one was a garbage truck that must have been moving pretty good, as we felt the impact on the fourth floor of our building. As bad as hitting the thing was, drivers also got a stiff fine out of it to remind them of their mistake.

I retired from driving a "Super-Semi", 225 feet long, (driver in front and back) 19 axles and we could carry 997,000 lbs and could get into a ton of war stories on oversized loads and mis-haps. He obviously was not running under an oversized permit, or would have known exactly his height, plus at that height would have had a front high pole escort. Being familiar with fines in similar situations, "he's broke"--lol. Happy Trails, Steve and Susie

We had the exact same overpass on I 5 in Redding hit twice since Nov. First cause $250k. Next almost twice that amount. It's ridiculas that these truck drivers don't have a clue. 14.6 high was the overpass clearence, both rigs were carring heavy equipment some 16 ft high.
