Axel talk 6K, 7K, To camber, or not to camber.

What did Ozz think it takes to upgrade from 6K axles to 7K axles.
Why, new axles, or course..... WRONG
The Axel 2006 original tube I have on my 6K rated 'Axel' is rated for 6 or 7K#. I did not know that. This is the tube only.
The hub on a 6K Axel is only rated for 6K#.... WRONG it is rated for 7K#
So, I asks myself what does it take to re-rate my 6K Axel from 6K# to 7K#?
New springs and Brakes. Yep.
Now, they do have a heaver wall tube, but the thinner wall is still rated for 7K.

I have got so much conflicting information on axles and weights, my head was starting to ignite. I spent all morning on the phone with Dexter dealers here in Kansas City, and also with Rick Capsa, product manager with Dexter.
Here is a copy of his last email to me on my unit. (I emailed him the axel ID number. Stamped on it about a foot from the passenger side, centered)

Jim:
To upgrade to 7000 lbs components you would need to change the brakes and the leaf springs. The part numbers for new brakes that are self adjusting is K23-464-00 LH ($112.08 each) and K23-465-00 RH ($112.08 each). You would need one of each per axle. You would also need to change the leaf springs from the current ones that are rated at 3000 lbs each to leaf springs rated at 3500 lbs each. The part number for the spring is 072-027-00. The price for the spring is $79.60 each. You would need 2 springs per axle. Based on 2 pair of brakes and 4 leaf springs the shipping cost would be around $72.00. If you have any questions please let me know.

My engineer-influenced thinking is leading me to believe that rather than a thin tube rated at 7000# (is this another sticker-like Tredit deal??), it sounds like a thick tube 7000# tube would be less subject to bending (the more miles traveled, the more abuse the tubes will take). If the price was nominal, it sounds like it would be worth investigating further Ozz. My opinion only, as always.

It would be stronger, but the thinner tube is still rated at 6,000# according Dexter.
I am not suggesting any purchase or not to purchase a component, jus reporting the fax mam'.

I say slap a sticker on it and call it 7k. Then we can all raise hell with the vendor. My head is still spinning from the wheel discussion and am not totally convinced if what I read is really what was said and read on the road to chaos. What I really need is a DOT sticker stating I can load my truck with as much weight as it will haul. Then someone will add, you can't do that unless you have timbrens or better yet, you must have air bags. Just my random thoughts the first day of Lent.

Mike:
If you loaded all of that weight in, you would need another or a different sticker for the weight on the license of the truck.....JB

Ozz when you were cking with local dealers did you price the parts. I just replaced the brakes to self ajusting on mine and they were alot less than factory price. seems like a dealer can get them alittle cheaper.JMHO

This sounds like the same kind of exercises I went through when I upgraded my F-250 to an F-350. It can be a real trick to get all the facts lined up, but if you can find the right person which it looks like you have, then it's "in the bank".

Have fun with this work. It sounds like it will probably mean an additional leaf (or a whole different leaf spring pack) and you'll need new U-bolts and nuts and the spring pack center pin because these are not reusable.

I think you are on the right track.

I have noticed in my business that is the rule, they do that to protect their dealers. They know all dealers work on a different mark-up, so they are always high to provide that factory-dealer-distributor price spread.

Yessir That sounds about right Ozz. I paid about 40% of that price for mine.

I have one small question. I read that you can change the brakes to self adjusting, What kind of brakes come with the 5th wheel from the factory. I did not know that you had to adjust the brakes on a 5th wheel since they are electric? or am I missing something on my spring maintenance duties. Sorry for the question but have never heard of adjusting brakes on trailers.

Dexter recommends adjusting brakes after the first 200 miles and every 3,000 thereafter

I understand that the newer Keystone Dexter brakes are self-adjusting. I don't know what year they went to that.
Get under your trailer and copy the number on the Axel down. It is about 2' from the right-side wheels level in the middle of the Axle.
Mine was 1133398913. You can call, or Email Dexter and ask them.
