North Eastern California

Well we hit the road tomorrow --- June 11th for northern California. Gonna go up hwy 395. First night in Bishop. Then up to the Reno area for a few nights of donating money. Then on up to Lassen National Park. Gonna spend a few days in and around that area. We have some friends up in that area and hope to stay at their place for a few days and see the area from a local's point of view.

Next we head down to the Bay area for a mini family reunion/50th wedding anniversary for my wife's cousin.

Then on down the central coast of CA for a week or so ending up at our daughter's place in Simi Valley. It's our granddaughter's first birthday! That should be exciting. At least it won't be as hot as it was last year in Phoenix when she was born!

Then be back home about the 15th of July. We'll rest up and get ready for our big trip to the Rally!

We do plan on staying touch on the MOC but sometimes the old cell phone just won't make a connection. Everyone drive safely and have a great time over the coming weeks. Have a great 4th of July!

Remember you can sort of keep track or our progress by clicking on the "Where are we?" link located in our signature.

Travel safely and enjoy,

HamRad

Hello Everyone,
Well I'm sorry to report that we did NOT take any of Reno's $$$$$ with us! Wish I'd had some of those quarters some of you were talking about. We could have used them! LOL
PatoDonn.... we plan to take a look at the entire area. Thanks for the info on a good place to visit and to eat.
Just148.... we are looking forward to the big event. It's so nice to be able to spoil the grandkids! :-)
D and M on the road..... Thanks for the comment regarding the GPS radio location device. It's a lot of fun having that up for our friends and relatives to watch.
Fla Native..... I'm so sorry to hear of your continuing leak problem. I think your only answer may be to move to AZ!

Our trip is going well. Our next stop is Lassen National Park. Hope we have a phone connection there. If not it will be a while before we make contact again.

Hello HamRad,
Hope you're enjoying your trip. We just returned from the Ramona/Julian/northern San Diego area and can't wait to tell you about our trip. We made a sidetrip to the Barona Indian Reservation Casino and we think we won your money!!! We're off again June 25 for Oregon and Washington area. Hope to hear from you again.

Well we've made it all the way Redding, CA. Spent about a week up in the Lassen area and it was great! I will post some pics as soon as we get home. Still on the road for another couple of weeks. #29 fans...... glad someone is winning some of that money. We had a good time in spite of not winning any $$$$. Am looking forward to hearing all about your trip. We may almost pass enroute south while you're on the way north. I know you'll enjoy the trip north. Have a great time. HamRad

Mary Kay and Dennis, sounds like you're having a fun trip. Looking forward to seeing the pictures. I hope you didn't miss your books too much. We spent a night just north of Redding when we were out that way awhile back. I can't remember the name of the park but Vicki has it written down. I know we had a heck of a time getting level but it was a nice park anyhow. Drive safe the rest of the trip.

Ham Rad!!!!!......... according to your "Where Are We?"..... you are about 20 miles from us. (You are in Vacaville) Are you in a park for the night?

From the maps... it appears that you are parked for the night in the Vineyard or Gandydancer RV park?

After seeing how close HamRad was to us, we hopped into our car and drove on down about 20 miles to see if we could find Dennis and MaryKay. And there they were right where their tracking device showed. You gotta check it out if you haven't done so. We were able to click on one of the tracking links and it showed us an ariel view of the campground they were in making it very easy for us to recognize exactly where they were parked for the night.

That was our first time meeting someone from MOC and we throughly enjoyed meeting up with Dennis and MaryKay. They were very gracious even though we popped in unexpected! We are just sorry we only had about an hour to visit, chat and exchange information about our Montanas. Our visit made us realize how much we are going to miss out on because we can't attend the rally this fall.

Anyways, Dennis and MaryKay.... it was very nice to meet you and we'll keep our fingers crossed while you pull the Montana into the South San Franciso Bay area traffic tomorrow!

HamRad (Dennis and Mary Kay)
Glad to hear from you again. You will probably be pulling into your driveway before we leave town. We will be leaving Monday AM, June 28 heading up I-5 as we want to get to our destination as quickly as is practical. We are saving the scenic routes for our trip home. Will fill you in on the details on our return mid-August. How was that grandbaby? Did Grandma Mary Kay get to hold her enough? I'll bet we can look forward to some pictures of her in your vacation shots.

#29 fans,
No. We'll be going down 101 after we leave the Bay area. We leave there on Monday 28th. So we'll miss each other this trip. If you are looking for a nice place to stay near the Stockton/Sacramento area we would recommend French Camp RV Park and Resort. Very nice park but a bit on the expensive side. It is just off hwy 99 but is plenty close to I-5. A nice crossroad is located to get you across town.

It is still on the green side of things north of the Redding area. Pretty much the golden brown south! Have a great trip. We certainly enjoyed our trip up the Oregon trip last Fall. I still need to get those pics posted! Also grandma Mary Kay did have a great time.... tho it did wear her out.... playing and babysitting with little Miss Kaylene! Will get some more of those pics posted to if I can find any! ROFLMAO!

Drive carefully and enjoy your trip.... I know you will. If you want specific places to stay we can recommend several..... Also D and M on the road..... have posted some excellent places to stay. We pretty much followed their advice on our trip.

And speaking of D and M on the road..... What a wonderful surprise! I was just getting up from my pm nap and who's at the door? D and M! Thank you for coming by and sharing your experiences with us. We continue to meet some of the nicest people in the MOC! It is a good little club. They had taken advantage of my Ham Radion tracking station that I have running all the time. They just called it up on the internet page and it shows them exactly where we're located. Of course that is assuming another Ham Radio station hears my signal and transfers me into the internet. But it worked and D and M on the road ..... are living proof of that! Thanks again folks for taking time out of your busy day to come visit us. We really appreciate it.

Steve and Vicki...
It is good to see you back on the air after a long absence. I trust all went well on you trip. We thought of the books a couple of times but did not really need them. We had specific plans on where to go and then when we got to our friends place they took over and we had local guides to any and everything we needed. Hope you both are doing well and look forward to seeing you in a few months in Goshen!

Thanks for all the comments and visits and all.... we think MOC is a unique place to be!

Later.... Dennis, Mary Kay, and the boys... Stormy and Roscoe

We had so much fun meeting up with HamRad that we think Keystone should adopt a motto for the Montana brochures......

D and M On The Road, we agree with you. We met Dennis and Mary Kay in Bakersfield earlier this year (have lost track of which month!). They are super people. We really enjoyed them and their hospitality.

Dennis, if you want those books back before September, just email me and let me know. It's not a problem to ship them back to you. Otherwise we'll get them to you at the rally. We both thank you very much for the loan of the books. We spent hours going over them. Just wish we'd had more time to take advantage of them. Your notebook with your personal comments and info on rv parks is amazing. You two are so organized!

Steve and Vicki,
Thanks for the offer to mail the books but absolutely no need for them currently. We will NOT need them on our trip back east. If you can give me any info on which route to take and or what to see from eastern OR and WA into ID, MT, WY, and the Dakotas we'd appreciate that. Our plan is to go up I-5 just to get into eastern side of OR and WA and then to start doing our sightseeing as we head east. We want to hit the main tourist attractions along the way. We do NOT need to see Yellowstone since we did that just a few years ago. I'll check out your postings.... D and M on the road... indicated there were some new postings to read.... so guess I'll go do that.... See you later.... Dennis and Mary Kay

Dennis & Mary Kay, there are probably others with far more knowledge of that area than us but since we just did basically the same trip you're contemplating....

As you know, we normally avoid interstates but because of some time constraints we used more interstates this time. Besides, we were in beautiful states we'd never seen...

We went east from Portland on whatever interstate that is, then cut north and spent the night at Pasco, WA. Visited mtmytmax there. OK, just fired up Street Atlas to aid my memory. Interstate 84 out of Portland. If you can, go north from Portland to I-5 exit 49, then east to Mt. St. Helens. North side of the mountain is what you want. Excellent place to visit. Also the Columbia River Gorge east of Portland. Mt. Hood/Timberline Lodge, Bonneville Dam fish ladder and sturgeon tanks. Check the website for specifics. Then we went on east to US 730 to I-82 North to Pasco. From Pasco we went to Spokane on US 395, catching I-90. East on 90 through Idaho and Montana. That's a beautiful drive. Saw a live bull moose in the wild on a "scenic drive" near St. Regis, MT. Sat there and watched him 20 minutes or so. Little Bighorn Battlefield (Custers Last Stand) is just south of Hardin on I-90. You can actually see the battlefield from the freeway if you happen to know it's there. We continued down I-90 to US 16 at Moorcroft, WY, to Hill City, SD, in the Black Hills. 12 miles from Mt. Rushmore and 8 or 9 miles from Crazy Horse. We really enjoyed the Needles Highway, Iron Mountain Road, Spearfish Canyon Road, and the Wildlife Loop in Custer State Park. We did this loop four times. We were here 11 nights and probably needed more time. We were on the go more than we normally like. Again, time constraints. Back to I-90 through Rapid City (Lasater is there although we weren't fortunate enough to know that and meet them) through Wall (see Wall Drug). We also did the drive and picture stop thing in Badlands National Park, near Wall, SD. We then overnighted at Pierre and visited with Random Line. They're moving so might not still be in Pierre when (if) you go through there. We then cut south and bounced through Nebraska into Kansas to visit my folks. We're heading up to Sioux Falls, leaving here 7/10, to get registered to vote so if you're in that area around that time give us a holler. We're thinking we'll stay a week, if not more, and see the area. After all, we ARE SD residents.

Well we're in Paso Robles, CA. Starting to get a bit warm down this direction. Running in the low 90s. Not bad but we had gotten used to the great weather up in the north country.

We have had a great trip so far. Met some great folks out there on the road and have re-kindled some old friendships. All in all just a great trip. I could get used to this stuff!

Sure wish the price of fuel would come down but other than that all has been well. Lowest we've paid was in Reno, NV... was 1.78. Highest we've seen was just over 2.50. Oh, well... we just keep on going as long as we can.

Everyone have a happy and safe 4th. Our next stop will be the Solvang area.

Thanks to everyone who has replied re: our trip. Keep on traveling and have a great time.... HamRad

Dennis, here in the Kansas City area (MO side) I'm paying 1.579 for diesel. If I'd drive a few more miles, Flying J would be a penny cheaper. Nice to let the fuel budget wounds heal for awhile.

Wow! What a nice trip. We capped our travels by visiting our daughter and her family in Simi Valley, CA. It was Kaylene's first birthday party! Sure much cooler weather than in Phoenix! :-)

We enjoyed almost perfect weather our entire trip. Although it did warm up a bit down in Simi Valley. Of course here in Bakersfield it is up in the high 90's and low 100's.

I'll attempt to get some pics posted to our PictureTrail site within a week or so.

Now it's a rush to get everything ready for our Rally trip. We have decided to go the norhtern route. We're going to Spokane and heading east. Our first destination will be Glacier NP. Hope to meet up with some of you on the road and of course we'll see you all at the Rally.

Happy travels and see you soon.

JohnG3,
Thank you. It is really a simple setup. I have a GPS unit that routes its information to a translation device that then sends the info on to a Ham Radio. The Ham Radio then broadcasts the info. If another Ham Operator "hears" my broadcast and either then sends my info directly into the internet..... if so equiped.... if not then the info may get re-broadcast until such time as it does get sent into the internet. Of course this all takes place at near the speed of light so it has taken me much longer tell you about it than it does to actually do it!
Thanks for asking and I hope I didn't make things worse with my explanation.

Interesting! You will be in our territory tomorrow if you are heading over the border into Oregon. How was the smoke near Redding? I believe one of the fires is near a campground where we used to go and I hope they were not affected.
