Ford has my truck

And won't give it back. We have never had a problem with this 08 F-350 6.4L..However on the way to the N.E rally when pulling off the tpk into a rest area and slowing to @ 35mph the power steering went away. That is not a good thing when you weigh about 22.5K. Gave it some power and it came back and had no further problem...Then on the way home when exiting the tpk to the tool booth at @ 35mph same thing..power steering went away. Applied power and it came back.

Took it to my dealer , explained the problem and said this was not a good thing. They had it Monday and found no problem. Called and said they had called Ford Engineering in Deee troit and requested assistance. Called to day and said Dee troit had them doing some test and could they keep the truck. Said we did not need it till June 24th. The diesel guy was baffled and said he does not like being baffled..We shall see. Told them I would trade even for a 2011.

I hate those intermittent things where you can't just pull in and they can immediately see what it is doing.
I first thought you were drooling over a new 2011!

Rich, I knew you would find a reason to visit the Ford dealer. I called him and he has a 2011 with your name on it just waiting for you to return. Did you see those SPECS??????? Should be right up your alley. Good luck with the new truck!!!!!!!

If it is anything like the problem I had, it is the hydro-boost going bad. Mine went bad all at once. Stopped at a station to fuel up, then turned the key and had lost power brakes and power steering. They replaced the hydro-boost and the power steering units.

I had just parked the Montana at the CG down the road from the station. I felt very grateful that it did not happen while we were in the mountains around Glacier National Park earlier that day. Coach-net got us to the dealer and the CG.

Thanks Stiles. I will call the dealership in the Am and see if they are looking at that.

Had the same thing happen to the Chevy Express van I drove at work. The power steering had quiet and the truck shop just replaced the pump and all was well. The next day and 250 miles from home and no power steering at idle or just off idle. Ok at higher speeds. Going down hill and around curves on US-50 in western Ind. was real fun when you put a lot of force on steering wheel then all the sudden the trans down shifts and engine speed goes up. the shop had to replace the whole power steering pump and ressivor assy. then all was well again. Good luck.

I agree that when you have those kind of problems the best thing to do is trade. Just think Rich that 2011 has 390 horses.

Rich, the most important thing you should do at this point is see if there's a Chevy dealer anywhere near the Ford dealer.

Tom..There is ..right across the street.. Ford feels that the power steering fluid is contaminated. Ford Deee troit described what it would look like... a strawberry milkshake.. and mine looks like that. the only folks who have done maint on the truck are dealers in Florida and here.. Anyhow they are going to flush it out.

It took them that long to see that? Strawberry milkshake in the reservoir should have been spotted imediately. It sounds like some other problem is causing the fluid to turn into a milkshake. For example, what caused the contamination? This flush might work for a while until the real problem shows up again and causes the fluid to turn into a milkshake. You better keep good records on this one. Either that or swap for the 2011 after they claim they fixed this truck.

Rich
This isn't the first time I have herd of this happening. The power steering cap is right up at the front of the engine, some kid at the dealer made a mistake and dumped antifreeze in it.

mlh...I am sure you are correct...It never did this before and we had the 30K maint done at 30,137 miles April 20th 2011 at this dealership. The truck was mostly in the driveway and the only trip we took was the NE rally in PA . A round trip of about 400 miles. The truck has less that 600 miles on it since the maint. Today I asked the service manager how the power steering fluid got contaminated between the last maint and now. We are going to have a chat tomorrow...

Now Rich, you know that you cannot fix something that is not broke. After the first time you should not have given it power and fixed it, you should have pushed it to the shop and told them what was wrong.........

Think Cummins.

There is a TSB out addressing the issue. If there is a TSB it has happened enough for Ford to issue one. They showed me a picture and it was indeed pink although they did not save any of it as I asked them to so I could have it analyzed to see what the contaminant was(i was bluffing) The last maint was done at the dealership April 20th and the truck has been driven less than 600 miles since. Most of that going to the N.E rally in PA where we observed the problem. I suggested that the evidence although circumstantial was overwhelming that the contamination occurred at the dealership. They of course would not admit that but flushing the power steering system was NOT a covered warranty item but they did not charge me for it and they had to flush it 3 times to get it clean so that tells the story.

Someone made a mistake and the dealership knows it and I am sure has addressed it. This is a good dealership and they have always provided me good service.

I hope the problem is resolved. You just can't trust minimum wage employees working on the lube rack.

So, do we suspect someone topped the PS reservoir off with water? That was my thinking when you said "strawberry milkshake".
