High winds
We made our maiden voyage with our 3685FL last week. Not only was this the 5er's maiden voyage, but mine as well for pulling a 5er. The day we left, it was very windy. The gusts were reported to be over 50 MPH with sustained 35 MPH. By the evening though, they had subsided to around 20 MPH. We headed out that evening since the reports were indicating that the wind should die down over night, but I was very nervous. About 4 hours into it, the wind picked up again to what I guess to be 40 MPH. It was a head wind, luckily, but I couldn't get the truck past 50 MPH and it wouldn't shift into 5th gear. We decided to pull over for the night and wait until morning (thank you WalMart). Fortunately, the next morning the winds were much better, and the rest of the trip went effortless. My question here is what is everyone's rule of thumb about how windy is too windy. I noticed that once the wind got over 20 MPH (head wind no less) the fuel milage dropped very quickly. This was another reason I stopped. I was basically getting no where fast and spending a lot of fuel to get there.
