Need some education about my home Dish in my RV

I'm not a full-timer, and I have no problem grabbing both my receivers from home for a trip.
My question, is what sort of dish do I need so both receivers will work as they do at home. I know the answer is to get one just like on my house and tripod mount it, but I have no idea how to get one of those. Just Ebay or Amazon or something? Is there something I'm not thinking of here? Thanks!

You can get them almost anywhere. Here's Amazon's offerings: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss...na%2Caps%2C270

We have Dish and had the satelitte tripod and worked well when we could get a signal.... That was the if. We finally bought the Winegaurd carry out and love it. Works with Dish and Direct. Automatically finds the signal. I think Dish has thier own also called tailgater. We also got an extra reciever and leave it in the RV only $7 a month. Makes everything easier. Just a thought. We still only pay for the house Dish.

I initially wanted to go this route, but I am reading that both TVs will have to watch the channels available on whichever satellite the primary receiver is locked onto? I am reading about people that have to buy a second Tailgater (or whichever brand) to get both TVs operating independently of each other. That is why I figured I would need a full sized dish? Am I wrong about this?

You are correct regarding both TVs tied to the same single satellite at a time. I'm one of those that bought a second "Tailgater" so the wife could watch anything she wanted in the BR. The single unit works fine but I finally gave up and bought a second one to have the full channel selection on both TVs. We full time and move often (every two weeks or so) so this setup works best for me. If I were a weekender I would have stuck with a single Tailgater and just lived with the limitation. If we didn't move so much I would have gone with a standard dish on tripod for full channel selection on both TVs. Moving is enough work, I didn't want to muss around with pointing the dish every time.

Mark,
I particularly like the tripod sold at TV4RV. http://www.tv4rv.com/sunshop/

The other device that really makes the setup easy is a good meter. I prefer satlook lite, http://www.solidsignal.com/pview.asp?p=SATLOOKLITE&d=Solid-Signal-Ka-Hi%2FLo-Ku-Satellite-Signal-Tracking-Meter-SWM-Meter(SatLookLite)&q=satlook

The one thing I learned about setting up the dish, is that it is critical to get the shaft of the mast on your tripod perfectly plum. Doing so makes hitting the satellites easy.

Ken

Also, I have a tailgater that was "retired" and now lives in my garage. The reason being is that on occasion, I travel north. The farther north I went, I'd have trouble getting HD due to the small dish. I already had the big dish and tripod so I went back to using it. The meter was the big difference in setting up quickly and easily. The second reason is that I like using the Hopper and Joey from home. The larger dish is required. The tailgater only supports the 211, single tuner.

I had the winguard 2 in fact. That way we could watch differnt channels on the two tvs we have. We had a problem with getting a signal unless we got a spot in the open. So because we whent under a low bridge a took the AC and sat off I upgraded to the Dish Traveler lots of money $1,850.00 but it can get a signal even when in light tree cover. As it happens I still have one of the Winguards so if I do get into a spot that the Traveler can't get a signal I can use the portable.

Ever wish you knew exactly where the satellites were in the sky so you would know where to place your dash to get through the brush. There is an app for that and it's free. DishPointer. It works great. Hold your phone up turn it until the satellites come into view and see if anything is blocking the view.

It's all about the size of the dish when it comes to usable signal strength in different conditions. Have heard only good things about winegard carryout anser and it can handle two tvs watching different programs AS long as they are on the same satelite. To watch different sats, you need a dish that is oblong shaped so it can see the three sats at the same time. No way around this...an old home dish or the traveler period! John

We have used the Wingard X2 all summer. Worked great. Yes, the second receiver can only watch channels received from the satellite selected by the main receiver. In our case, DW get the main receiver and I watch the on-the-air or campground cable on the second television or just read a book! I have not bought a separate tailgater for the second receiver--BUT--it could happen--it is only money!
