Shackle Bolt Replacement

When I arrived at our campsite I noticed that the driver’s side rear shackle bolt was completely gone & the passenger’s side was broken & ready to fall out. I contacted a mobile RV service company who came out today to make the repairs. They couldn’t get replacement wet bolts quickly enough so they installed grade 5 bolts with a knurled shoulder & locknuts (tightened as much as possible). They did not install any type bushings. When asked they said that no grease was necessary & that these bolts should last a lifetime. My questions are: 1) does this repair sound correct? 2) will this be safe to drive on for an extended period of time? 3) where can I get the replacement wet bolts with the brass bushings (just 4 bolts. Not the entire kit)? TIA

If the original bolts broke and fell out, why would he think a grade 5 bolt would last a lifetime. I am sure someone will be along shortly to tell where they have bought them. But a tire store where I get my inspections done also has a trailer sales and parts store there and they have bins of wet bolts and bushings there.

Any "trailer supply" store will have them. You need to know the width of the spring.

Grade 5 bolts aren't going to last a life time at all! you can get wet bolts at most trailer supply stores or you can order them from Amazon also. and have them shipped to wear you are at.

Before i had I.S. i carried a grade 8 bolt with nylon locking nut with me as a spare. I had a wet bolt break while traveling and did not find it out until i was parked in the drive-way getting ready for the next trip. I ordered a wet- bolt from dealer that would not be in before i was ready to leave so this is how i decided on the grade-8 bolt. I believe it was 4 1/2''x5/8'' .I believe the grade 8 bolts are better than the wet-bolt grade 5's.

Call Redneck Trailer Supply. The one in Illinois is in Normal, (309) 862-1000, and tell them what you are looking for and they will ship it to you. http://www.redneck-trailer.com/NormalIllinois.aspx

I've been able to purchase individual components, such as bushings, springs, and any items I needed.
