G614 tires

I went to America tires today to order the G614 for my 3400. The sales guy called a rin sales dist and was told that any 8 lug heavy duty rim like our alumium rims on the 3400 will handle the 110 psi of the G614 just do not exceed the weight limit of the rim. I was also told that the only difference between 6000 and 7000 lb axles are thesize of the breaks. You guys out there that have gone to these tires have you kept the same rims and is there enough clearance to the top of the wheel well with the one inch hieght diff. ?? New rims I was quoted at 225.00 ea for alum.3750lbs high presure OUCH!

I've been running those tires on my 2008 3400 for almost 2 years with no problems!

ljensen,

Please do yourself a favor and go to this website www.tirepros.com . Click on the dealer locator tab and type in your zip code to find a proffessional dealer near you.

The information you were given isn't exactly accurate. Being in the tire business, I see all types of wheels, axles, and tires on a daily basis. There are many 8 lug heavy duty aluminum wheels on these and other trailers not rated for 110 psi.

I'm not 100% positive, but I believe the 7000 pound Dexter axle has heavier bearings, spindles, and heavier duty brakes than the 6000 pound axle. A call to Dexter would probably be in order, and I will do that today.

Clearance is not a problem. I haven't seen a fifth wheel camper yet with ST235/80R16 tires, that the LT235/85R16RST G614 wouldn't fit, with room to spare.

I will post my findings on the axle when I get an answer.

On Edit - I have spoken to my axle dealer and discovered the spindles and bearings are the same on both the 6000 and 7000 pound Dexter axles. The difference is in the wall thickness of the axle tube, with the 7000 pound tube being thicker.

Lonnie is right on about making sure your dealer is knowledgeable. I have also been running my G614s for 2 years. I am using the OEM rims with metal stems. The rim were rated for 110 psi. I also monitor tire pressure closely.I run them at 105 psi. Wear has been even on all tires.

I really wonder if the the 7000 lb axle is thicker then the 6000lb one. It might make since, but I got my information from a 30 year GM engineer. My OME rims are only stamped with the wieght capacity 3042 lbs no PSI info. I really would like to use these rims and save some money. Does anyone know who made or distributes the OME rims so we could get accurate infomation and how much they cost. I messed one up in the blowout it dragged quite aways. Just to let you all know I drove 20 miles not knowing I had the blowout untill someone finaly honked. I rode the one tire all the way I did hear a noise but I went across a expansion joint on bridge looked back and the tires looked OK but come to find out it wrapped around the axle and I did not see any rubber flaping and it was also pouring rain this kept the smoke away.

Lonnie is thorough and accurate on what he says. I called Dexter when I upgraded my axles and while I don't have the specific dimensions any more, I was told the 6000 Lb. axle has a thinner wall thickness than the 7000 Lb. one. I seem to recall the 6K was .275" and the 7K was .325" but don't quote me. I think the only difference between the 7K and 8K axles is the brakes. The wall thickness is the same for those two. Call Dexter or go look it up on their web site if you want be sure.

Just had the G614 installed on the aluminum rims of our 2007 3400RL last week. Our rims had stickers on the inside saying it's rated for 3750 lbs and 110 psi. I would not trust anyone's idea that because it has 8 lugs it's rated that high. I want to see a sticker or a stamp on the rim itself. I've only towed with these tires for about 45 miles but there's no clearance problem I can see.

By the way, Lonnie gives good advice. I used his link to find some dealers and am very pleased with the service we got, as well as nobody else could touch his price.

That guy is wrong about the difference between the 6k and 7k axles. We replaced the 6k oem Dexter axles with the 7k Dexter axles. Yes, the brakes are bigger. However, the axle is also thicker, or so I was told at the time. We also were given the choice of going with the lighter duty tube (the external tube, not the axle) or the heavy tube. I don't really know what difference it makes but we chose the heavy tube. Also, we were told we could continue to use the oem spring pack that came with the 6k axles but that would then become the weak point. We went with the 7k spring pack also.
