staying close to home

We just recently purchased our 295RKD (our first 5er)and are really excited about planning some short trips - 2 to 3 day weekends - during the summer and fall months. We love staying in state parks and even national forests...not much on RV campgrounds per se.

We live in central Oklahoma and have already made plans to stay in a couple of state parks here in our home state that are only a few hours away, but are also looking at places to stay in Arkansas, Missouri and Texas as well. We love being in the great outdoors and like to take side trips to visit interesting towns, historical sites, etc. We have looked at possibly staying in Petit Jean State Park in Arkansas...any one been there?

I know that this is a wide open request, but are hoping for some recommendations of places to stay in the above mentioned states. Thanks!

One nice possibility is Queen Wilhelmina State Park on Rich Mountain near Mena, Arkansas. They have nice camping facilities and a lodge and restaurant. Weekend crowds in the Fall. This was the very first place we stayed in our first fifth-wheel.

No doubt you know about Beaver's Bend in Oklahoma--a very popular park.

In Texas there are some very nice state parks. Our favorite local park is Tyler State Park, near the city by that name. Nice lakeside sites and full hookups--even WIFI, though by satellite.

I briefly looked at the Queen Wilhemina Park in Arkansas...will have to look at it again as it is in a beautiful area.

Yes, Beaver's Bend is a really great area...we've been there several times, but never camped. DH wants to wait until he gets comfortable pulling before we go there....alot of winding and curving roads between here and there!

Will check out the park in Tyler as well...thanks for your suggestions.

Many years ago we spent a night in Palo Duro State Park neat Amarillo, TX. It was awesome. They had one of those great out door plays called "Texas" that was truly worth the stop. But that was nearly 20 years ago. Don't know if it is still going on...

Velma and Bill-- Since you want to make a few short trips in the Midwest area why not consider coming up to Nebraska for the MOC Central Plains Regional Rally to be held July 14th-19th?

Check us out here on the MOC Forum. You'll find out about the Rally in the MOC Regional Camping Clubs sections under the MOC American/ Central Plains Region. It's under the thread titled: It's Time for a Rally.

What a better way to break in and checkout your Mountaineer than to come to a MOC Rally and meet some of the MOC members that have been here on the website and from the area and beyond? Our email address is in the thread mentioned above so if you have any questions just drop me a line and hopefully I can answer them. If not, I'll bet I can find out the answers! We are setting up the agenda and hopefully will have it done by next week and posted so those attending and thinking about attending can see what we'll be up to!

I can promise one thing and that is you will have fun, food and friendship with a bunch of MOC members that want to get together for just that!

Oh, did I mention FOOD! I've never been to a Rally yet that there hasn't been some of the best tasting food you've ever eaten and to go along with that there's the friendships you will start just by being here!

Hope you will consider us and hope to see you up here in July!
