04 cummins lift pump
How many 04s out there still have their original lift pumps. I still have mine and I have 53K on it. I heard that they go bad fast and the cure is an in tank pump which is covered under the emmissions warranty. Some years ago I added an electric fuel guage before the high pressure pump and have been running about 11 psi at no load. Just wondering what I have to look forward to.

When your pump goes bad it will be noticed on the gauge. If or when it goes bad if you end up having to pay for it I would suggest a FASS pump mounted on the frame. On my 98.5 it ran 16 lbs at idle and 12 to 14 pulling on a hill.

Still original motor equipment on my '04 2500 with about 46k on it. Ball joints are another question that I won't get into here. :-)

My extended service contract expires in October of this year so that's when my parts will start failing.

Here is what Geno's Garage says about the pump. Thanks kcjolley for pointing me that way. It has been a couple years since I looked there.
03-‘04.5, HPCR 5.9-Liter Engine
This engine has a fuel transfer pump that is electrical. Its life span is 80,000 to 120,000 miles. Should this electrical fuel transfer pump fail, it will not harm the expensive HPCR Bosch CP3 fuel injection pump. The Dodge and Cummins parts networks do not sell a replacement pump for these year model trucks. Instead they sell a kit ($350-$400) that changes the fuel pump’s location to an in-tank design. Labor for this conversion can easily run another $400. The in-tank design was adopted on ‘05 to current model year trucks. Geno’s Garage does offer a replacement fuel transfer pump for the ‘03-’04 trucks. It is part number PUMP-FPD4089602 for $179.00. We also offer FASS high-performance pump/filter combinations. The need to monitor the fuel pressure from the fuel transfer pump is minimal – no gauge is needed.

I picked up a hi-output replacement oem style pump from an outfit in New Hampshire that specialize in that sort of thing. Cost 150.00 replaced the stock one at 125,000. I have a pressure indicator light on mine, set at 8 psi. I carry a spare pump also. Took about 15 minutes to replace it roadside some where in the desert of Nevada in 2009.

Be careful because when mine went bad on my 02 the injector pump took over and in a very short time it went out because it isn't designed to pull the fuel. Luckily it was under warranty. The factory replacement transfer pump will only run about 6-8 psi which is not enough and the injector pump will eventually go bad. The FASS external pump is the best way to go. Their warrnaty sucks becuse for repair you have to send in your pump and wait to get it back but it is a 6 yr warranty. I wouldn't wait, I'd go to the FASS before you have a problem.

On the 99 - 02 trucks (they have the VP-44 injection pump) a lift pump failure will MOST LIKELY destroy your injector pump
On the newer common rail trucks (03 - current) they use a CP3 injection pump that is not as dependant on a good pressure supply from a lift pump
As has been said, FASS makes a very good aftermarket lift pump, and so does AirDog - both are about 400 to 500, and are lifetime guaranteed

Now that you said that, I do remember someone saying that the CP3 actually doesn't need a transfer pump as long you keep it running. Getting it started is where you have a problem. Don't know is that is true and it has been about 5 years ago.

I just sold my 04 Dodge/5.9L Cummins with 92000 Miles (I bought it new) and had no problems with anything. I upgraded to an '07 Dodge DRW 6.7L Cummins to tow my '02 Montana 36'. I understand I have to change my fuel filter housing and filters because they no longer make filters for the original housing. I guess my luck ran out when I sold the '04.

No - the 6.7 is a good motor
Just like all of them, they got handcuffed by the EPA, but the growing pains are pretty much over
Yes - you should change your fuel filter. If I remember correctly, the OEM filter does not filter fine enough to protect the fuel system. Many aftermarket fuel filters capture particles of 2 microns (plenty sufficient to protect the system)

Just bit the bullet and ordered an Air Dog FP100. Hopefully it does what it is advertised to do. Should get it on next weekend. Right now I plan on leaving the stock one mounted so I can hook it back up if needed. Can't wait to see what the air dog will do.

I have a late 04. When I had juat over 20 K, while in Alaska, I lost the Bosch lift pump. Dealer in Anchorage, said it was a common problem. Replace under warranty and I now have 48K with no problems.

My neighbor had 180,000 mi on his original pump when it started showing low pressure. My old truck was good to 70,000 miles and it's stock replacement only lasted 20,000 mi. Some just last longer than others. As I and others mentioned if it us under warranty let the dealer change it and if it is out then bite the bullet and get a Fass pump.
