Forest Closures Southwest Colorado

Anyone planning summer trips to SW Colorado should reconsider. As of today the San Juan National Forest is closed to almost all activities. Other forest in this area are expected to close also. I think they should have closed it sooner. We were on patrol a couple days ago and found some campers with fires going; there has been a fire ban for months.

The 416 fire (near Durango) is now at 22000 acres. The Burro fire about 1000 acres. Estimates floating around are that these fires could reach 65000 acres.

More fire photos. I don't care what these guys get paid; it is not enough.

Agree on pay. After living in nm for 23 years, I have seen the fire crews risking their lives because of dumb campers doing things that were downright stupid. Think we should weenie roast a few to make a point to others that follow same crazy practices.

We are planning a caravan of RVs and side by sides (ATVs) to riding parks somewhere around Durango next year. Any advice on good places to stay and good riding trails in the area appreciated!!

Scott,

I hope those campers burning fires got very expensive tickets. Almost all the AZ forests have been shut down for awhile now.

Hopefully they can get it contained. We were camped west of Southfork near Wolf Creek Pass in 2013 when they had a large fire complex finally topping 100,000 acres. Each day early morning there was barely any smoke and it appeared under control. By late afternoon each day, it looked terrifying. We finally had to evacuate along with the town of South Fork, Wagon Wheel Gap, and all surrounding areas.
