Filling fresh water tank from large water jug???

We just got a 2018 High Country 305RL. I have just about got everything figured out but one.

If I had to, on our old KZ Durango, I could put water into the fresh water tank via a large water jug and the on board water pump. I would put a short hose into the jug, and with the appropriate valve settings, the pump would send the water directly into the fresh water tank.

It does not seem I can do that with the Montana?

I had tried filling up my fresh water tank using the winterize valve but it was painfully slow. Just looked at Dave's instructions and I know I didn't "turn on cold water at outside shower". I'll have to try that.
Fortunately mine has the freshwater fill at the back of the trailer and I use a 12 volt Harbor Freight pump.

We have a 45 gal water pillow from CW we use to refill when boondocking. A small electric pump is used to move the water which we put in through the normal city water connection with the valve set to fill the gravity tank. Works well.

Hi,

just found this thread for a good restart from my end
I tried the method via the Winterizing valve.
It looked like there is no suction at all.

Do i understand this wrong?
Do I have to come with pressure via an external pump to push water into the winterizing valve?
Or, what i anticipate, is that my winterizing functions probably broken or not functional?

Thanks for your tips

Mike

No if you have a good connection on the hose fittings (good gaskets & no leaks that will let air pass in) you have the valves in the right positions then should be able turn the pump on and the pump will prime itself and suck the water in through the winterizing connection and fill your fresh water tank... It will be slow but it will do it, I would turn off the pump every 3 - 4 minutes for a couple minutes to allow it to cool... They are continuous duty but its 12 volt DC so it will get hot...

Getting a good leak free connection to the winterizing port has often been a problem. Even the slightest leak will prevent it from working. Also helps if you have the water jug (or antifreeze jug when winterizing) at a level near that of the winterizing port to reduce the lift height.

Some folks have had success using two washers to seal the connection better.

I had a winterizing issue were the pump wouldn't suck hard enough to open the one way valve in the winterizing port. I talked to a service guy at the dealer and he told me to turn the filter screen around were you hook hose to, to push the valve open and worked perfect then. then when done turn screen back around so valve closes back up. But that was for the pump to suck fluid in, he told me there have been a lot of issues with theses valves not opening with the pump ,said pump cant open them a lot of times.

I completely removed the check valve on the winterizing port. The water pump works great now! That valve is simply to much of a restriction. Easy to remove and you have a ball valve downstream. Only there too meet code....

I will say I was thinking of this very idea just the other day (IE: using onboard pump to refill freshwater tank). Glad to hear it will work! Thanks for info

I use a Harbor Freight pump also. Bought it for less than $30. It pumps it in very fast and hooks up to the battery. I use my Jump Start Pack for convenience. Just need a couple of small hoses and some water jugs. I adapted a piece of pvc pipe on the end of my one hose so the hose does not curl up in my water jug.

The above has corrected the problem for many. However mine was the opposite. The washer was so thick there was not enough threads left on the fitting to pull the connection tight. Had to sand my washer down some and worked fine afterward.

My 2012 347THT regular water connection for city water and then a pour spout behind a locked panel for hose fill or by using water jug to fill.

You don’t have the power fill feature. Or disadvantage depending on your outlook.

Folks just remove the check valve. Really. You don’t need it!! Then order brass hose ports

Dave, Your post was very helpful. Thank you for figuring all this out. I'll certainly give this a try on our next dry camping adventure.

Just turn the fill valve to the fill position. Then when done pumping in the water, turn it back to normal, just as you would if filling with a hose.
