I40 From Knoxville, TN to Waynesville, NC

Howdy,
Anyone been down (or up) I40 From Knoxville, TN to Waynesville, NC this year? How was the traffic and roads. I know there is a great deal of semi traffic.

It's not bad through the gorge. Truck traffic seems to stay pretty steady. Good thing is you don't have to follow them, just swing out and pass if you are comfortable with that. We usually make pretty good time that way going east or west. Have the camera or GoPro out because it is always beautiful.

Thank you for the information. I know there are several tunnels and from looking at Google Earth they all seem to be 14.4ft. Have you encountered any different?

Your welcome. No problem on the height. The tunnels are well lit but they do have a radius to them. It really is a beautiful ride. From what has been on the news lately, the last slide is pretty much cleaned up.

Thanks again, for the information. One last question - how are the grades? Any really steep grades to watch out for?

No real steep grades if you are just going as far as Waynesville. The interstate feels narrower through that section because of the concrete barriers, but lanes are typical interstate width. The steep grades are east of Asheville and there is proper warning before you get to them. And again you are welcome Sir.

Travel that often from the beach to Maggie Valley and on to Nashville. The 2 grades are farther east and I pull them at 55 easily. Engine brake maintains that down hill too. A lot to see in the area. We will be there the month of October.

Just traveled to Concord,NC for the All-Star race and the Coca Cola 600.
Not a bad drive at all. Good roads, nice rest areas.
As stated earlier, it is a beautiful drive.
