Bye bye Blue Ox, hello Butch!
Shed a little truck weight, gained some more room in the bed and still have protection against C.R.S. and Duh! Moments.

Nice job Ozz. Being anal as I am I would drill a small hole in the far end and use a small lock. Just a thought.

It is a nice thought, if I had the brains to remember to double-check I wouldn't need the bed-saver.
I would just lose the key to the lock!

OZZ, Great pics, however, you STILL have to remember to close the rod. One could still be distracted, maybe. At least the bed saver was there all the time. Just my thoughts, not intended to criticize. It's good to know there are options!!

Oh, I know. BUT, you can hook up with the rod closed, MY Blue ox was so high, I had to get close and then drop the pin and back into it, so I may try that, don't know.
There is an element of using one's head when getting off the couch and going outside
When I dumped my trailer, it was when un-hooking, the trailer rolled back off of an airbag I had under a wheel, other side wasn't chocked. Doing things differently now.
Now I chock wheels front and back, AND use my roto-chocks, both sides.

OZZ,
I know many folks on the MOC have this, but I guess my only issue is, are those 4 nuts/bolts going to hold the force of the pin hitting the bar?

I think bolted onto the hitch shoe securely, there should be no problem. The force of the impact will be transferred to the hitch shoe, also, You have to have faith in the engineering behind the assembly.
I looked at it and felt comfortable with it.

I have always been impressed with your mods Ozz and wished I could be as good as you. This time I am. I've had my Butch special for quite awhile and it looks just like yours. Yea me, LOL

Dick, you are a trailblazer! It's good to hear people have them, we need to hear from someone who has tested it... anyone?

I'm thinking of getting one in the Spring (or during the winter off season) . I too would like to hear for those who have used theirs for several seasons.

I have had mine since spring also. Glad to say it hasn't been tested!

Mine has been on since Spring also and fortunately has not been used. When I talked to Butch, after installing mine, he had tested it with his hitch and it did what it was suppose to do. Of course, what else would he say?

Just one really big problem so far. I always used to drop the emergency brake cable over my hitch handle. On this trip I made kind of a sharp S turn getting into a gas station and had the cable hook on the nuts that attach the cable on Butch's thing and lock the brakes up with a group of tractor trailers bearing down. Didn't realize what happened until I hit the gas and drug the trailer into the station and then got out and looked. Now I hook the cable on Butch's bar. Not a good thing at all, but that Cummings diesel will pull anything you hook it to.

DQDick,
I also drug my Montana down a dirt road after I caught the cable. I thought that there was something wrong with the truck. Back then I had the 8.1 GMC and it did slow it down quite a bit. When I stopped, all the brakes were smoking. Felt pretty stupid but after that I learned my lesson.
By the way, if you like the way your Ram pulls, you will like it even better in tow haul mode. And besides, your transmission will be happier with less heat.
See ya at the Rally
And thanks for all your efforts as Wagomaster!
Al
