It's just plain STUPID
Towing a Montana across the Texas panhandle in 35-45 mph winds is just that, STUPID. I waited 3 days in Dallas but got the itch and thought it will get better closer to Amarillo. Dumb and stupid at the same time.

You're anything but stupid. I think those winds are the norm there.
I asked a tough-looking gal in a gas station if the wind always blows like this when we stopped out by Shamrock, she said usually worse. I couldn't hardly get the truck door open.

At one time, we lived near Wichita Falls, TX, near the Oklahoma border. The wind blew constantly for nine months. Then one night it stopped. My wife and I both woke up thinking that there was some loud noise. We realized that the wind had stopped and we were hearing the oil rig pumps working. Chick-a-chick-a-chick-a-pow, pow, pow of the two cycle engines.

We tow from here (30 miles north of Dallas) to Colorado (thru Raton) every June and fight those winds almost every year. Have just come to accept it.

Southern Colorado is known for gusty winds. They usually blow west to east across I-25. Makes for challenging towing of high profile vehicles.

I would like for ONE time, just once, at least once, that I could get a tail wind. I always get a headwind which completely messes up the MPGs or a side wind from either side that makes me have to hold on tight or I'll be changing lanes if I lose concentration. Driving in wind sure tires me out and scares my copilot. It doesn't matter what direction I'm driving I never seem to get a tailwind. I have driven in some 25 to 40 mph winds and it's no fun, slows us down and wears me out a lot. What makes it more tiring is most times I can't use the cruise control because of it which adds to the exhaustion.
I have to admit I've never done this in the Great Plains. I imagine those winds with nothing to block them would be even worse.
Stay safe everyone.

Lonnie down in Clovis, just has the warehouse set the tires out the back door, the wind blows them down to his shop.

We spend a year, 75 miles East of Alburqurque on I-40. Worked at a Travel Center called the Flying C Ranch. After about 3 months we told corporate we would have to move on because of the winds, they promised to build a wind wall. It was 60 ft by 40 ft X 10 ft high. It make a differance. Before the Fifth Wheel rocked and at night the slide Toppers sounded like a Hellocopter was hovering to land. One of my duties was to pull the trash bags out of the 50 gal drums and replace them with new ones. The wind almost took them out of my hands and I had to poke holes to keep them from blowing up in my face. We had to weight down the barrels with bricks and still put a hand full of rocks in the bag to keep it down in the can. Thier was trash on the ground all the time, I was told to let it go and it would blow into Texas before long. My eyes felt like their was sand in my eyes at the end of a shift. We will never go back their for any length of time.

Just remember - West Texas is so flat that you can watch your dog run away for 3 days! Of course, the wind will throw him around a bit...

If you hold up for the wind to stop in West Texas you will be there for a while. I get about 11 MPG except when crossing Texas It drops to about 7 MPG because of the wind and my heavy foot.

Wind? What wind? That's just a breeze . As gpats said, living in these parts you just learn to live with it.

We drove the Dallas to Amarillo route one Spring. As we were driving along, I noticed the steps on the Monty (downwind side for this trip) were out. I asked my wife if she put them in--YES. So we stopped and folded the steps in. About 10 miles down the road--steps were out again! The wind was 35-40 from the front left quarter of the truck and under the Monty(we were heading to Amarillo)-It blew the steps out. We now use a bunge cord on the folded steps--problem solved. Some MOCers that I have told this to--say they need both hands to get their step to unfold--I guess regular maintenance--a little oil on the pivot points--made mine open EASY!

My steps are hard to open too, but they have blown open twice. I put a bungee strap on them now.

Thanks a lot folks. We are in Gallup for 2 months and was hoping the wind was going to die down soon so I could go fishing and now you people say it blows like this all the time. Thanks a lot, you just ruined my day. Oh, and Ozz, I just realized, I've got your MeerKats all around us. Geez.

Ha! Leave them some old carpet by the door, they will scavage that for nesting and maybe leave the insulation alone, AKA Trailertrash's problem.
The Wind; we wintered on South Padre, I still lean to the right when walking at times

You folks are getting me a little apprehensive on our upcoming move from Wisconsin to Texas in the next few months. Of course, where we our building our dream house in Colorado, the architect is required to design for 135 mph wind load. All things are relative.
