Warning concerning 3400RL

Two things;

First, pull the Two screws on the triangular shaped cover at the drivers side rear of the unit, it's carpeted, and under there is the backside of the water fill. My vent hose was kinked shut, I imagine all are. They leave slack when connecting both hoses, vent and fill, then push them in and secure the mounting flange, this kinks the hose. You have to cut the hose, cut a 2" or so section, then re-join with a barbed fitting and 2 small hose clamps. You need that working vent.

Second, secure the cords with wire ties on the slide outs at the outside ends, the black rubber coated wire will get caught around the protruding bolt and cause strain and possibly pull it in two.
Easy quick fixes that will pay off in the long run.

Good Advise Ozz.I had already secured the cords and other things under all the slides the first week we had this thing in the driveway.Preventative measures for the cost of a few tie wraps. On the kinked hose..First one of the two long screws holding the triangular cover on(the top one) was a short screw not a long screw so it was screwed into nothing, but not to worry the long screw was laying on the floor under the cover so at least we have the screw, another little thing. The small hose would have been kinked had it been connected to anything but it was hanging loose, another little thing. Easy fix...Keep me posted on any other.."little things" you find.

Also check water lines running to the side of the heater. Notch cut out for line had foil tape on it, but there was still a very sharp edge that line was sitting on. Not easy to get to. Also heavy line from pump was crimping a water line. I put rubber grommets around water lines going through rough cut holes. pipe insulation that you use in the winter works great in some areas. You guys have me checking everything. The other night my husband asked me what was I doing. Exploring I said.

Ozz,

I have an 06 3400 but may have the same problem. This triangular part, is it inside the coach and under the desk?

Bobcat,
Good call. Those two small Brown wires should be wire tied up as well, they are the thermostat heat wires, (I am pretty sure) Glad you checked.
rickfox, richfaa is correct, the one under the desk is where I brought my Two cables up from my In Motion Satellite dome to the entertainment area.

Rich - Ozz, man I don't know but my unit must have been built at another location than you guys. I bought mine right off the lot from the dealer the same week it arrived from the factory and I don't seem to be having all these problems you guys are. I pulled the box at the back over the fresh water fill and my hose is not crimped at all. I checked the wiring under unit and don't see need for extra wire ties. Oh well, maybe mine was built by the day shift and yours was built by the night shift. Ha.

Indy,
Good deal, I'm glad they are all not like that, you may be closer to the truth than you know about the shift workers.

My two brown wires were OK. Maybe we are just to picky but I see hanging wires as a probable trouble down the road and tie wraps are cheap. Rodger on the night shift..there is none. The problem is inadequately trained assembly line workers, assembly line moving to fast for the experience and training level of the workers and poor quality control.(and that is at all the brands factories) If going to the fall rally don't miss the factory tour and I suggest the Sprinter tour during the week as there you can see the craftsmen at work.

No night shifts is what we were told. 4 to noon. Then they go home and work the farm.

You all have me convinced to remove every cover on the rig and investigate what's inside, underneat, on top, etc.

See another Montana or Mountaineer on the road? Flash lights twice, it might be one of us!

When I am on the road, I will feel that I have done everything possible to insure no 'Ghost' type problems. it's much, much easier to double check everything when the Monte is sitting in my side yard. No fun working on them in a rest stop-I've been there.

Ozz, thanks for the heads up on the freshwater vent. I will check mine tomorrow. I am pleased with the overall quality of my 06 Montana and I did complete a 44 day trip with absolutely no issues so I can't complain but every time you look behind the nice finish, this is what you see.
This was the behind the shallow cabinet that I installed my fireplace.

Wrenchtraveller,
Doesn't that drive you crazy? even hidden, you would think they would blow it out with an air hose, they surely have on the assembly line. I found Two empty caulking tubes, a hank of wires and a 4# ball of plastic under the Monte, that fell on me as I removed the Black bottom covers.

It does bother me that clean up is not part of their work ethic. As an apprentice, I was taught that clean up was a very important part of the job and as a tradesman I still clean up after every job.

Maybe Old World craftmen think it is ok to sweep the dust under the carpet.

I think some people are more prone to being neat as others. One of my biggest complaints about the crew I supervised in IT was the lack of leaving neat installations (wires wrapped, etc.).
