How to best re-install Mushroom Attic Vents

When I got a new roof a few years back the repair shop left off the Mushroom Attic Vents. Didn't realize it until much later. Since so few RVs have them and we never got too hot or cold I didn't worry about it. But now that we're parked on asphalt in Houston TX and have already replaced the original single AC and added the optional Bedroom AC I ordered two Mushroom Attic Vents. The Keystone Alpine Fiver next to me has them (so I can see about where to relocate them).

Fortunately I've got lots of screws left over from removing the bedroom skylight vent to replace it with an AC (only 4 screws needed for each mushroom vent), and have Dicor non-leveling caulk so I'm good to go except how best to proceed cutting two holes in the roof. The roof is thicker/stronger as another layer of luan plywood was added to aid the roof replacement.

Cut a circle in the rubber with a knife? Use a jigsaw? Get a large Hole saw?

Suggestions/experience are appreciated!

Have a great weekend!

Chas-- Do you mean tell me the repair shop left out your attic vents when they put on the new roof? Since you had to put in the extra A/C indicates to me that your unit has no way of venting the moisture and the added heat from your unit except for the power fan ceiling fans. This is not good! I'd contact Montana Customer Service and ask them where they put the ceiling vents on your unit. Your repair shop should be held liable for the installation of the vents since they are the ones that plugged the holes where the vents were. This is highly unlikely but you might be able to feel where the vents holes were plugged and you might be able to find them that way also but I think you will have better luck with Customer Service! Good luck and let us know what you find out and how you re-install the new vents! We have a regular 2004 unit and our vents are mid roof just ahead of the bedroom vent(where the new A/C is now located) and just past the rear A/C. Others may be able to give the exact location!

Rondo, yes, the repair shop back home in AL left off the vents. Since there is another layer of luan plywood on the roof (its a lot stronger/thicker than it was) I can put the vents where I want. The neighbor's Alpine has them in front of each AC, but I do seem to recall the rear one was behind the main AC unit like yours. I have no problem making the "repair" myself. I added the second bedroom AC and replaced the main AC myself. Just would like to know the best practice (s) for cutting holes in the roof.
Thanks!

We have had 3 montanas, all roughly same length. In each, location was the same. Maybe a Montana owner in the Park with a similar unit will let you take some measurements. Wonder how the repair facility plugged the holes?? I would X the roof on the installation spot with minimum necessary cut, and use a hole bit and drill. X cut would facilitate caulking once installation is complete. Agree with Rondo, venting is important.

We're not in a Park. We're in a Church Parking Lot with just a little shade in the mornings while volunteering for a few months. A Keystone Alpine is next to me and two Newmar Countryaires are behind us. I figure I just need to miss the roof beams which I can see early in the am with dew...
Thanks for the advice!

Not sure you will be able to spot the beams via dew like you can on the sides because of the wood roof/rubber membrane over those beams, but certainly worth a try.

I wouldn't cut the rubber with a hole saw as you may tear it. I'd cut it away with a utility knife and then drill the holes. You can cut an X in the rubber and tape it out of the way while you cut the roof. Then you'll have material to fold back around the vent.

Correct. Assumed when I said an X cut would facilitate caulking after installation, that it was understood, razor knife for the X cut, hole bit for the drill.

I have a 3400 RL Montana and noticed that I could see the roof beams because of the early morning dew on the roof. Just have to get up there early in the morning before the sun dries the dew. Good luck.

All, thanks for the advice. I installed the two mushroom vents this am. Tools and caulk cost more than the vents!
