Spare Tire Wheel

Well, I got a surprise today. I had a slow leak in the right rear of the trailer tires - losing about 10 psi a week. So being full of vim and vigar I decided to remove and take to tire shop for repairs. I have the new fancy aluminum wheel rims but when I dropped the spare to put on the monty while the original is repaired, long a behold it has some sort of white rim that looks like goes on a boat trailer on another type of camper. It is certainly not an aluminum wheel! Rich, Dave, Ozz - what about it, do you guys have the same on your new 3400's or is this something I need to take up with the dealer?

That's what my spare is like too on my 2006 2955, I figure they don't put an aluminum rim on as a spare since it will rarely be seen or used. That's just my thoughts.

Standard steel for the spare.Check your OEM valve stems for the slow leak.It is a good idea to have all the OEM stems replaced with better grade steel stems..

Rarely do they use aluminum wheels on the spare. Just another way to cut unecessary costs. The white wheel you found is more than likely the same white spoke wheels you would gotten had the dealer not ordered the rig with aluminum wheels.
Personally I'd prefer the white spoke wheels as they cost less, are not high maintenance and rarely crack or leak. Granted they are not as pretty as the aluminum but I don't need pretty wheels I just need functional wheels.

RVs are just like cars. The Hondas/Toyotas will not have an alloy wheel on the spare (even if it was full size) the BMWs and Benz will.

Well thanks guys at least I don't feel ripped off - just disappointed because my original thoughts were to put the spare on and fix the bad one then use it as a spare.
Rich, me and the tire went swimming in my swimming pool. The DW actually spotted the bubbles, I was ready to give up but sure enough just about in the center of the tread was some very small bubbles, has to be a small nail hole or something. I had to mark it with some white-out stuff as the tire dealer would probably have never found it.
I'm with you Rich, - I suspected a leak around the valve stem but it was tight as a drum - no air bubbles at all.

same as the spare on my F350 (standard steel wheel)...but at least the spare tire is identical as the others...and not some off the wall type like a donut

Phill, You slay me, swimming with the tires!
That's a cool idea, hope the fence is high enough so the neighbors couldn't see that one!

I have a privacy fence around the pool. I just rolled it up there and me and that hummer jumped in. Glad the heater was on, water temp was about 84 but that was the only way I could submerge the tire to find a leak. Momma said putting it in the bath tub was a no-no.

Same on my truck. Steel spare rim. I like pretty wheels and wish the spares were pretty on both the truck and the trailer. I agree with Glenn, it's a cost savings to the mfr.

See another Montana or Mountaineer on the road? Flash lights twice, it might be one of us!
