I-81 in VA

We will be traveling from Raleigh, NC to the NE rally in Bath, NY and need an overnight stop at a campground. We don't like to do parking lots or truck stops. I see that Shenandoah CG in Mount Jackson, VA is about 1/2 way, but wouldn't mind getting a little further up I-81N the first night. We are not going I-95 because it's I-95 and not any quicker from our starting location.

Any recommendations for CGs?

Jim - Check out Candy Hill Campground in Winchester, VA. It's just off of 37 (western loop around Winchester). It's a nice, clean campground and easy to get in and out.

Jim, Candy hill is a great camp ground, let me also recommend a little different route, I travel this route when I pull my trailer back home to NW PA. It's a great route that get you off I95 before it gets into the Washington mess, take I95 to route 17 at Fredericksburg, Va , follow Rt 17 to I 66 west to I81. You will get on I81 just below the exit for Candy hill.

Safe travels

I need another little bit of help. When I map the route from NC to Candy Hill via I-81, it starts me up US-29, which I'm familiar with, but instead of taking me to I-64 directly, it cuts me over to I-64 via VA-6. It's a shorter diagonal, but I'm not familiar with VA-6. Is it easy for a 5'er to drive?

I travel out that way from time to time, I'm not that familiar with VA-6, but I think if I was pulling my 5ver I would stay on Rt 29, it is good all the way to I64

Jim - VA-6 is not the best for a 5ver but I have pulled our Monty on narrower roads. I would defer to Stan Olah (MOC-SOLA123) for his recommendation as he knows that road very well. Aside from that, I would recommend you continue on US-29, to Warrenton, then take US-17 to I-66 then onto I-81 and Winchester.-
